How to Select a Cantaloupe for Best Flavor and Ripeness
Besque County extension notes several indicators of when a cantaloupe is ripe. Look for a smooth basin at the stem, thick netting on the rind, and a yellowish ground color. A ripe melon has a pleasant odor and yields slightly to thumb pressure. Hold at room temperature for 2 to 4 days to finish ripening, then refrigerate if desired. Avoid overripeness bruising and mold near the stem car as signs of decay.
