James W. Smith of Bosque Publishing Co announces the purchase of the Valley Mills Tribune from Collis D. Sellman. The Clifton Record and Valley Mills Tribune will keep separate identities but print in Clifton with Valley Mills staff. Sam D. Logan Jr. becomes Valley Mills editor. Bart L. Ivey oversees production. Mrs. Dennis Plemons is News Reporter and Office Manager.
Texas Secretary of State Martin Dies Jr said the U S Supreme Court decision invalidates a Texas law restricting revenue bond election votes to property owners. The high court struck down a Louisiana law that limited voting to property tax payers as unconstitutional. The Texas Constitution limits voters to those whose property is rendered for taxation in bond elections.
City Secretary M R White says seven blocks near readiness for paving with low bids expected soon. Residents want to know costs before signing up as the city estimates 60 to 90 cents per square yard, with owners paying curb and gutter costs of 150 dollars for a 100 foot lot.
Friday July 4 many stores banks and offices close for Independence Day. A few gas stations and grocery stores will stay open for travelers and picnickers. Clifton firms announce closures Friday and Saturday July 4 and 5 per local ads.
The regular first Sunday singing will be held at Lanes Chapel on July 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.
Veteran receiver Bobby Joe Conrad was traded from St. Louis to the Dallas Cowboys and will compete for a backup spot behind Bob Hayes and Lance Rentzel. The move aims to add depth and pressure in Cowboys camp as Conrad brings route savvy and a storied record to Dallas.
Volunteer crews from Clifton and Meridian fought a range fire north of Meridian along State Highway 174 from 5 p.m. to nearly midnight Tuesday. Fire Chief Harris urged residents to prevent fires amid hot dry conditions and warned rural burning should wait for rain.
The parcel post weight limit rises to 49 pounds for certain zones while larger zones stay at 30 pounds. First class office length and girth rules will expand to 78 inches next July and 84 inches the following year. New rates take effect July 14 for several special services with COD and return receipt fees adjusted. Congress has yet to set a date for the 7 cent first class postage increase.
