DPS fears 42 deaths during Fourth of July weekend

Most Clifton and Bosque County stores and offices will be closed Monday July 5 in observance of Independence Day. Area banks post offices city halls county courthouse in Meridian and state and federal offices will mark the holiday by remaining closed.

Car Hits Pole Damages Mailbox On Post Office Lawn
A husband and wife, William M. Kuykendall and Bertha Kuykendall of 307 North Ave. T, were injured when their 1968 four door sedan left the curb and struck a pole and mailbox on the post office lawn Thursday morning. They were treated at Goodall Witcher Hospital Foundation and released. The accident occurred at 11 50 a.m. damaging the pole mailbox and shrubbery. Police say no one else was hurt in a separate 5 10 p.m. collision at West Stn St and South Ave O. Restitution was made in a theft of five candy bars from a coin operated machine at B and J Laundry. Three juveniles and two adults were questioned. Arrests last week included one for public intoxication and another for possession of a prohibited weapon found in a car at 1 45 a.m. Thursday.

Valley Mills hosts bicentennial weekend celebration
Bosque Valley Heritage Society sponsors a two day event at Santa Fe Park Valley Mills with booths games and contests on Saturday from noon to 6 pm including a museum art exhibit and food stands. Sunday features an old fashioned picnic and a 2 pm program with Fort Hood color guard and historian Dr. William C. Pool.

Clifton native honored for 50 years in clergy
The Rev. Morris A. Sorenson Sr. of Clifton was honored for 50 years in the clergy. Born December 12, 1855, he served as visitation pastor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rockford and has held multiple pastorates including English Lutheran in Hazen North Dakota and McFarland and Yellowstone churches in Wisconsin.

Sales of Series E and H United States Savings Bonds totaled $7502 in Bosque County during April. For the first four months, Bosque County sales reached $32800, about 16 percent of its $200,000 1976 goal. Texas month sales were $21912800 with four month total at $95165176, about 35 percent of a $2724 million yearly target.
