In Meridian region notes residents and travelers attend rites for Mrs. Oliver Gambett from Meridian while others visit family across Texas. Names include Mr and Mrs T L Darden, Mrs Winta Belcher, John Dunlap relatives, and local workers and Baptists. Mrs. Johnson dies at 87. funeral held in Meridian with ministers Poe and Thompson assisting.
Citizens along the route from Texas to central west Texas urged completion of Highway 67 in Beath county as a main traffic artery from Texas to the Panhandle. The route would save five miles over the Fort Worth path. The Dublin delegation attended, pressing for action. Chairman Robert Lee Bobbitt of the highway commission pledged possible steps to finish the highway before any redesignations.
A Koppers resident died in a Sunday fire that destroyed a home on Jon 24. The victim, a 99 year old man named Bill Martin, was found burned to death in the wreckage of the residence. Authorities are investigating the blaze and confirming the victim’s identity.
Miss Mozelle Murphree daughter of Mr and Mrs Willard Murphree of the city wed Mr Henry Gibbs Jr son of Mr and Mrs Henry Gibbs Sr of Valley Mills Saturday morning January 12 in the bride’s church, with Rev Hayslen of First Methodist officiating. Music by Mrs J G Bignaut, Mrs Alison Miller and Mrs Collins. The bride wore navy blue frock trimmed in white. Attendants included Nell Walker as maid of honor and Vernon Lockwell as matron of honor. Austin January 14. Chairman C V Terrell of the Railroad Commission warns Texans not to be lulled into a false sense of security about natural gas leaks. He outlines safety rules for households to prevent ignition and suffocation, stressing odorless gas, careful handling of flames, proper ventilation, and turning off gas at the wall cock rather than at appliances.
A group from the Future Farmers contour pastures near Clifton ran 1790 yards of pasture contour tines on the Oliver Hekken farm. Members attended Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening meetings at the high school or at members’ homes to study farm problems and plan improvements.

Washington Jan 21 Vice President Garner reiterated his view that Texans might discuss dividing their state into five separate states. He declined to comment on reports that some Rio Grande Valley counties favored forming the State of South Texas. Garner recalled he once proposed five states and had supported the idea in congress, but doubted any such division would be accomplished.
Fire swept through a two story building in Iredell area causing total loss of structure and contents. The adjacent two story block suffered heavy water damage while efforts to save the property were hampered by flames and wind. The Averell Index notes the blaze began near a corner and the local fire response faced extreme conditions.
Mrs. Oscar Blan died at her home in the Percival community on January 13 after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Crandills Gap Methodist Church at 2 p.m. January 13. Twins born to Mr and Mrs Snap Pinata lived only a few hours. Services for the infants were conducted by Rev. W. J. Mankestad at the parents’ home. Mr. Melvin Cranfill of Chicago and several local residents visited relatives over the weekend. Frances Lee Hanson of Seligman Arizona visits with her parents. G. Bronstad spent Sunday with his parents. Ervin Christensen of Kilgore was a weekend guest. Various local names appear in social notes and a communal shower is noted on the last page.
Basque County not in land purchase plan this year but receives about 2855 dollars in Farm Security Administration loans directed to 160 farmers. Funds target livestock, tools, and equipment while tenants with their own stock gain preference as the program expands.
A social event held at the home of Sire Will Manaley in Clifton on the 21st to celebrate community ties and raise funds for local causes. Attendees included residents and neighborhood organizers in a cordial gathering.
