Remains found near Smith Bend in Bosque County identified as Elbert Steven son Ballew born 1905 from Olney after ties to a 1963 missing person case. Sheriff A O Tiny Carr said a long investigation traced a four year abandoned pickup linked to the man and his family helped confirm the identity.
State Senator J. P. Word of Meridian and Clifton drew an odd number in the Austin Senate chambers ensuring a four year term. Senators draw for term length when the Senate is redistricted with odds serving four years and evens two. Word drew the final envelope, No. 23.
Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes named State Representative J E Ward of Glen Rose to five committees including Parks and Wildlife Agriculture Highways and Roads Penitentiaries and he was named chairman of the Enrolled Bills committee. Barnes praised Ward for his familiarity with committee issues and ability to serve the Legislature and people of Texas.
Employers and the Internal Revenue Service remind that employees should receive two copies of Form W-2 on or before Tuesday January 31, 1967.
A grass fire on the Powell ranch near Clifton burned about 20 acres and threatened a house. Clifton Fire Chief George Harris said four Clifton firefighters and a Clifton engine plus Meridian personnel controlled the blaze before any house damage occurred.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission will hold its statutory quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday January 31 in Hearing Room 117 on the first floor of the Sam Houston State Office Building Austin.
The Bosque County Unit of the American Cancer Society holds its first regular 1967 meeting Tuesday night January 24 at 7 30 at Moose Lodge Lakeside Village Lake Whitney. President Rev John Ed Withers urges wide attendance to hear Frank Cossey district field representative discuss the Crusade Organization.
Clifton Cub cage teams struggled against Itasca as district play began with the A Boys in a four way tie for leader, B Boys losing 58-39, and A Girls 40-21. Upcoming games shift to Feb 14 against Glen Rose with Jan 24 at Whitney in lineup changes. Glen Rose leads girls standings. Clifton A Girls stand 1-2. Junior tournament results include Itasca Boys champion over Crawford and Crawfills Gap winning consolation. girls Crawfills Gap top title and Crawford 28-13 consolation win by Glen Rose.
Dr. John Parks opens Bosque County's first modern animal hospital in Clifton with facilities for small and large animals, boarding, a pharmacy, and surgical suite. He notes about 30 percent of clients are small animals and expects farm animal cases to grow as rural vets are scarce. His wife Lucretia helps as general manager.
Judge Truman E. Roberts reports 686 new cases filed and 564 disposed in 1966 across Bosque Comanche Coryell and Hamilton counties with 426 cases pending as of December 31. Child support distributed totaled 89,864.37 across the four counties.
Bosque County Farm Bureau leaders plan to attend a state wide legislative conference January 25 in Austin. The one day session launches 1967 policy programs with a banquet to follow and expected attendance by Governor Connally and several top state officials. The event at Villa Capri Motor Hotel begins at 1 p.m. with a welcoming address.
Clifton Jaycees will hand carry voter registration forms door to door Friday night January 20 as a public service to help residents qualify to vote in 1967. County officials remind that the January 31 deadline for registration remains in effect and certificates may be obtained at the Bosque County Tax Office Meridian and from local outlets.
The Meridian Baptist Associational Workers' Conference will meet with Searsville Baptist Church, Valley Mills, on Monday January 23. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Thompson came home Tuesday after a week at the National Turkey Federation convention in Omaha Nebraska. They visited with Mrs. Thompson's brother Jerry Fardal and his family then traveled to Webster City Iowa due to the critical illness of Mrs. Harold Thompson who had a heart attack. They also called on relatives in Ellsworth Iowa while Mr. Thompson conducted business for The Thompson Hatchery.
