County Program Building Committee to Meet January 17

Bosque County's Program Building Committee is scheduled to meet Thursday night January 17 at 7 30 PM in the District Court Meridian reports say study group findings from last November will be heard to craft a five year improvement plan focused on agriculture. Citizens are invited to participate in this meeting.

Personal Property Tax Values Set by County Court

Meridian commissioners set annual personal property tax values to guide the Tax Assessor. Values largely match last year with two changes: sheep from 3.50 to 30 and grade goats from 3.56 to 3.00. Inventory values: cattle 6000 registered and 30 grade. sheep 7.00 registered and 3.00 grade. goats 7.00 registered and 3.00 grade. hogs 2000 registered and 1000 grade.

Clifton Band Parents Plan Meeting for January 21

Band Parents Association will hold its next regular meeting at 7 30 oclock on Monday night January 21 in the Band Hall. All members are urged to attend and visitors are welcome. Miss May Schow, teacher at Sat Houston State College Huntsville, and Mr and Mrs L M Welch of Beaumont visited Clifton from Friday to Sunday with Miss Bernice Schow and Mr and Mrs E F E Schow.

Shallow Oil Test Began Near Clifton on Meridian Creek

Drilling started Wednesday along Meridian Creek just north west of Clifton on property owned by Mrs John T Miller of Lubbock. J B Gilbreath of Valley Mills obtained the 700 acre lease and Fulton Place leads the drilling now about 80 feet deep with plans to reach 500 feet, possible 1000 feet if prospects stay favorable. Oil seepage has long occurred in Meridian Creek from the area near the rig.

Mrs Viola Walters Dies Here After Ill Years

Mrs Viola Walters 74 died January 16 in Clifton at 5:30 AM after heart attacks in 1961 and 1962 and hospital stay in December 1962. Funeral January 17 at First Baptist Church Clifton with Rev M D Woodruff officiating. Survived by daughter Faye Dowdy, brother Tom Harris, half sister Grace Fairchild, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Native Of Clifton Dies January 12

Clifton community mourns the death of Mrs. Erna Bradstreet Rose aged 68 years 6 months 13 days at her Clifton home. Born near Clifton and later living in Cranfills Gap she lived in Clifton and then Waco with her sons Vernon Murphree and Francis Murphree caring for her in illness. She was a member of First Methodist Clifton Civic Improvement Society American Legion Auxiliary and later in Waco. Surviving children include Francis Gwyndol Rex Vernon and Mozelle Beson with her husband Jack Rose predeceasing her.

Proclamation Urges Funds for Screwworm Eradication Program

Mayor Charles M Isenhower designates January 21 to 26, 1963 as a fundraising period urging Clifton area livestock producers to contribute to a drive to prevent halting the screwworm eradication program. The program, backed by Southwest Animal Health Research Foundation, Texas Animal Health Commission, and USDA, faces closure March 31 without $1,000,000 in new funds.

Guards to Campaign for March of Dimes drive

Clifton National Guard Company C of the 143rd Infantry will conduct its annual house to house campaign for March of Dimes funds. Jodie Amundson says the canvass will run Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00.

Clifton Participants At Governor Connally Inauguration

Clifton residents and organizations took part in the Austin inauguration events for Governor John B. Connally. Clifton High School band traveled to Austin, marching in the parade after morning swearing in services. Seven local National Guard members served in the honor guard, with air guard detail from Bosque County. Texas Highway Patrolman James Wright from Clifton joined traffic control duties for the inauguration day.

Bosque County Sees 1962 Rural Traffic Crashes Rise

Patrolman James A. Wright reports 1962 Bosque County recorded 141 rural traffic crashes resulting in 4 deaths and 69 injuries with property damage totaling 71,488. December alone had 14 crashes with 8 injuries and 5,731 in damage and no deaths.

Ed McKay Speaks to Bosque County Farm Bureau Meeting

About 40 members attended the Meridian Farm Bureau supper and meeting despite cold. Ed McKay from Waco discussed development of Farm Bureau policies, noting alignment from county to national levels and outlining the organization's aims and philosophy. The treasurer reported a balance of 31 649.56 on Nov 1 with income of 1 335.50 and expenditures of 1 517.01, leaving 1 705 at year end 1962. The group planned legislative participation in Austin and Dallas events and approved funds to support the screwworm program. Members praised Miss Lucy May Burrus for her Home Demonstration Agent work and prepared a letter of appreciation.

George M Harris reelected fire chief as Clifton Volunteer Fire Department names new officers for 1963. Albert Reesing marks retirement as secretary treasurer after serving since 1943. Local Farm Prices Include Eggs And Grain

Prices for eggs show large No 1 at 33 cents per dozen and medium and B large at 25 cents. Public eggs 20 cents per dozen and cracked eggs 15 cents per dozen. Grain bids list milling wheat 2.06 dollars per bushel, spring wheat 1.75, rye 1.93, barley 0.98, shelled corn 1.20 and ear corn 1.10 per bushel.
