Two Men Die After Cars Drive Off Lake Whitney Boat Ramp

Two bodies recovered from cars submerged at a Lake Whitney boat ramp in separate incidents. Robert A. Hutto of Cleburne, reported missing Thursday, found in a car 70 feet from the ramp. Bobby L. Webb of Decatur also identified. no foul play suspected though investigation continues.

Post Office Runs Out of One to Three Cent Stamps

Clifton Post Office exhausted one cent to three cent stamps Friday as patrons used 10 cent stamps bought earlier. After the rate change from 10 to 13 cents per ounce, small supplies arrived Tuesday and were quickly sold, with additional three cent stamps delivered Wednesday. Other post offices faced similar shortages.

Lodge Owner Dies In Car Crash At Lake Whitney

Oscar Joe Schaffner 50 owner of Uncle Gus Lodge and Marina died in a one car crash on State Highway 6 three tenths of a mile south of Valley Mills. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Clifton with interment in Clifton Cemetery. Survivors include wife a son Jeff Schaffner and daughter Charlotte Horton.

Burglary at Central Texas Lumber Reports Barbed Wire Theft

Five rolls of barbed wire were stolen from Central Texas Lumber Company at 201 East 5th Street during the Christmas holiday. Entry was via a rear window and investigators are probing the burglary. No injuries reported in two December 31 vehicle incidents.

Congressman W. R. Poage will address an assembly at Clifton High School Monday afternoon. He is expected to arrive between 2 and 2 15 p.m., according to spokesman John Hastings.

Brucellosis Quarantine Delayed Into January in Texas

The U S Department of Agriculture postpones the brucellosis quarantine on Texas from January 5 to January 9 at USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service notice. Judge J T Boyd issued a temporary restraining order December 30 in Castro County affecting the Texas brucellosis program.

Bosque County Democrats name temporary chairman and file notices

Mrs. W. O. Hanson was named temporary Bosque County Democratic chairman following Albert Hastings' death. Nominees for the May 1 primary must file applications by 6 p.m. February 2. Mrs. Hanson will be at the Meridian courthouse February 2 to assist filers. R. S. Ford became temporary precinct chairman of Precinct 7 Kopperl. A separate brucellosis-related state court action pauses the federal quarantine until January 9, with APHIS continuing cooperation through January 8, including inociting indemnities to infected cattle owners.

Postmaster Robert L. Baldridge Jr. reports holiday mail volume at the Clifton post office was lower than last Christmas. He notes the 1974 Christmastime handling was below the 1978 period, per his report last year.

Counties to review multi county jail plans in Hamilton

Bosque County officials join with Comanche Coryell Hamilton and Mills counties for a 1 30 p m review in Hamilton of proposals by four firms to plan a proposed joint jail serving all five counties. Bosque County Commissioners Court expected to reconvene in Meridian to vote on its selection.

Bicentennial Salute by CLC Choir and Orchestra

The California Lutheran College Concert Choir and Concert Orchestra in Clifton present a Bicentennial salute at Bettis Auditorium at 8 p m Saturday January 17. The 50 voice choir and 30 piece orchestra perform patriotic readings and works from Early America and 20th century composers with Dr C Robert Zimmermann directing the choir and Elmer Ramsey leading the orchestra. The program includes Battle Hymn of the Republic Copland and Ives along with Foster and Graefe pieces.

Sheriff Probes Cow Slaughter and Pecans Theft

Sheriff John O. Baxter reported the slaughter of an 800 pound registered cow owned by Walter Pullin of Walnut Springs and the loss of 500 pounds of pecans from a Meridian Clifton ranch. Four men including Virgil Smith Frank Harkome Wayne Hamilton and Jim Banta face felony charges and are held on bonds as the grand jury weighs the cases. Two Meridian men Dan Cumming and Danny Spurgeon were also jailed for burglary after pecans were recovered in Valley Mills.
