Death of Clifton custodian M J Tankersley in Houston

M J Tankersley aged 59 years 2 months 23 days of 603 Krueger Avenue Clifton died Wednesday January 6 at the M D Anderson Clinic Houston after months of illness. Funeral 2:00 p m Friday January 8 at First Baptist Church Clifton with Rev R H Dilday Jr and Rev M D Woodruff officiating. Interment Clifton Cemetery. An obituary will appear next week.

Baylor senior joins Alpha Chi honor society

John Phil Gilliam son of Mr and Mrs Phil Gilliam of Clifton and a Baylor University senior was among 30 Vacoars and Central Texans initiated into Alpha Chi on December 10 in a ceremony preceded by a lecture by Dr S H Thomson. A reception followed in the North Lounge of the Student Union with Judge Abner V McCall Baylor executive vice president welcoming the new members. District Basketball Opens Next Week In Clifton Area

Clifton boys and girls travel to Connally High Tuesday night January 12 to begin the 1960 district schedule. Preseason shows promising squads though Midway and Glen Rose loom strong. Clifton boys beat Moody 61 to 42 last week as Curtis Allen scored 17, while Clifton girls fell 56 to 42 at Moody despite Betty Kanz 36 points. Junior High Tournament at CHS gym runs Thursday to Saturday with Glen Rose Meridian Crawford Valley Mills Clifton among entrants and trophies for top finishers plus a sportsmanship award.

Ben Helmcamp Promoted to Yard Manager Role

Ben Helmcamp, previously assistant manager at Wm. Cameron & Co. in Clifton, becomes yard manager in San Saba effective February 1. His last day in the Clifton yard was Wednesday. Bill Painter is named assistant manager to succeed him. Helmcamp has over ten years with the company and will sell his Clifton home.

Bob Jackson Leases Humble Station in Clifton

Bob Jackson, son in law of Mr and Mrs W B Meeks, takes over the Humble Station at 102 South Avenue G after leasing it from Richard Fletcher. He served in the Army until 1959 and previously worked for Meeks Produce Company. Fellow operator Don Churchman, Mrs Ella Marie Meeks’s brother, assists. The Fletchers have rented their Clifton home to the Mattox family.

Hamilton Attorney Enters Judge's Race

Hamilton attorney H. W. Allen formerly District Attorney for Bosque and other counties announced his candidacy for District Judge to succeed retiring Judge R. B. Cross. March of Dimes Drive Begins in Clifton Area

Local chairmen and volunteers drive fund raising for the 1960 March of Dimes campaigns in Bosque County. Receptacles placed in downtown businesses and a Porchlight Campaign on January 25 will aid polio efforts with National Guard support in Clifton and fire department help in Meridian. Funds aid polio and research against arthritis and birth defects, benefiting many American families.

Local Hospital Notes and Community Health Update

Garland Wright recovered from surgery and convalesces satisfactorily in the local hospital. A. L. Bronstad ill during church and Mrs. Bronstad remain hospitalized with plans to return home soon. Mrs. D. H. Rhodes underwent major surgery January 4 in Clifton hospital and remains a patient there. Visitors from Pecos Kamay and Kansas share holiday time with local families.

Wet 1959 Stands As One Of Bosque County’s Wettest Years

Bosque County records show 1959 rainfall among the heaviest on record. Key totals include 51.05 inches at Magnus Larson’s Boggy area farm near Cranfills Gap and 50.95 inches at Sam Richards home in Clifton, with others reporting 47.23 and 47.16 inches as totals for Clifton area sites.

Man Charged With Trying Extortion Near Eulogy

District Attorney Truman Roberts charged T. E. Walker with attempted extortion of $4,000 from 85 year old Billie Glass of a farm near Eulogy. Sheriff Royal said a note and threats led to a dummy delivery, footprints to Walker farm, bloodhounds losing trail, and Walker bonded at $1,000 and held on stolen property found on his property.

Clifton market reported steady to strong cattle sales

Thursday market bids show cattle over 385 head at Clifton with steady to strong tone for most classes. Slaughter steers and yearlings fell short, good to choice cattle bringing $22 to $25, cows $16 to $18, bulls $20 to $22.50, stocker steers $23 to $25, cows and calves $150 to $200. Hog top $11.75 and lamb top $16.50.
