Clifton Mayor Declines Third Term After Busy Schedule
Clifton Mayor Jim B. Smith announces he will not seek a third two year term. He cites a busier schedule and desires time for family and other civic duties. Smith, born in Galveston, was first elected in April 1973 and re elected in 1975. He also serves as administrator of the Goodall Witcher Hospital Foundation and is a certified public accountant.

Burglary Active At Clifton Coin Op Stations
Coin operated machines drew burglars attention during the past week in Clifton. At Meeks Laundry 25 cold drinks were taken from an unlocked vending machine left open. A newspaper vending machine outside Calverts Pharmacy was looted. Two bottles of cleaner were taken from a machine at George Harris Car Wash. A cyclist was fined after arrest for eluding police and no motorcycle license. City election paperwork opens for mayor and council posts with filing deadlines approaching.

Clifton taxpayers paid 96 percent of taxes owed, totaling 81 374.99. Delinquent amounts for 1976 and prior years rise to 11 588.07 with 4 232.36 for 1976 and 7 325.71 for 1966-75. In 1976, 1 436.36 was collected including 1 096.46 delinquent and 399.90 penalties.

Eighth Cubettes Win District Title in 43-22 Victory
The Eighth Grade Cubettes defeated China Spring 43-22 to claim the district championship and earn a chance to face Academy for the title. Lisa Rowe led scoring with 75 points in the trio of district games, while Evelyn Tyssen and Bened Hyde anchored the defense with rebounds and steals. The team finished 16 wins 5 losses, with a junior high record of 27-8.

The first Bosque County History Fair will run February 24 through 26 at Clifton Civic Center. Exhibits open to the public February 25 from 1 to 5 p.m. and February 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Junior Historian Club members present papers and displays on local and Texas history. Prizes awarded to top ten in each category with a grand prize trophy. Public invited to view Bosque County heritage exhibits by local students.

Early morning blaze at CHS threatens gym floor repair
Fire at Clifton High School started in a janitor's supply room near the front entrance causing a ceiling and hallway flood as melted solder burst a water pipe. Superintendent Liardon says flooring repairs may require replacing the gym floor while no injuries were reported.

Wages to become Bosque County extension agent
George Wages will assume the Bosque County extension agent post on March 16, succeeding Robert Reich who resigned to attend Baylor Law School. Wages, previously an assistant county agent in Nacogdoches County, brings 30 graduate credits toward a master’s in agricultural education and is married with two children. He and his family reside in Nacogdoches and seek a home in Bosque County.
