Knust and Wiederaenders Win Hill Berkshire Honors at Fort Worth

Henry Knust and Lloyd Wiederaenders dominated Berkshire hogs at the Southwestern Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth. Knust, with grandson Lionel, earned champion boar and reserve champion son plus multiple ribbons, continuing a 30 year Berkshire line. Lloyd Wiederaenders, 19, captured champion son and reserve champion boar, contributing to Fort Worth's record 10,151 total entries across all departments.

Clifton Donates 524 to March of Dimes County Campaign

Clifton leads Bosque County campaign with 1963 total of 924.46 to date. Last year the town gave 523.95. Funds include donations from National Guard hose canvass 35.48 Veterans groups 1050 30.60 American Legion Auxiliary 550, 5.60 coin jars 14.80 schools 218 and other items 21. Capote and neighboring towns contributed varied sums. County total for 1962 was 1660.34. 1963 count to be announced next week.

Oswalds Host Brazilian Guests and Local Well Wishes

Mr and Mrs Bill Martinez and children Lucy Ann and Billy from Rio de Janeiro visited Clifton after touring Texas to see Bill’s parents in Laredo. They met the Oswalds in 1950 during a South American tour. Charley M. Gandy of Meridian has been receiving medical care in Clifton hospital since February 3 as friends wish him a swift recovery.

Alvarado Wins District Class A Boys Title in rout over Joshua

Alvarado clinched the District Class A basketball crown with a 20 point victory over Joshua Tuesday. Clifton, in second place, would need a loss and a Cubs win to force a tie as Clifton setups its season finale at Alvarado Friday night with both girls and boys teams playing. Clifton girls posted wins over Whitney 54 36 led by Christie Jenson 26 and Janice Willenberg 20, then beat Wasea 44 27 with Jenson 22 and Willenberg 19. Clifton Cubs split two as Whitney defeated them 60 43 but Itasca saw Clifton win 447 39 behind Pat Stewart 17 and 12 from Gary Fredenburg and Ronnie Thomas.

Clifton youths begin nine weeks of Navy basic training

Charles K. Rummel Jr and Richard A Wood both 17 of Clifton are at the Naval Training Center Great Lakes Illinois for nine weeks of basic recruit training. Indoctrination covers physical and military drills seamanship naval law customs swimming first aid. Robert Toten of Clifton has been in local hospital since February 5 undergoing medical care.

Clifton Horse Show Sets 1963 Rodeo Dates

Clifton group names 1963 rodeo dates September 19 to 21 at the fairgrounds and elects officers. Raymond Rogstad is re elected president with Butch Willingham as vice president and Homer McDougal as secretary. New board members include Tom Parks Garland Wright Tomie Joe Harris and Clarence Kettler.

W K Golden Dies In Fort Worth

Clifton mourns 82 year old W K Bill Golden long time resident who died February 4 at Doctors Hospital Fort Worth He spent recent years with Martha Lyon's home in Clifton while visiting his children HF Gray of Fort Worth and Kennard Golden of Oklahoma City Funeral rites were held February 5 in Fort Worth with graveside at Meridian Cemetery He will be remembered in a full obituary next week.

Educators Tour Air Force Academy Highlights Waco Meridian Leaders

Clifton and Meridian school superintendents joined a regional group from Waco and Bosque County touring the United States Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs. Major Jones arranged escorts and briefings while officials from James Connally AFIS supported the visit. Also noted are two local hospital patients, David and Travis Churchman, with respiratory pneumonia, expected to be discharged soon.

Wenzel steers champion at Southwestern Exposition

Bosque County 4H member Derril Wenzel’s Shorthorn steer won Champion Shorthorn carcass at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth. The steer weighed 965 pounds live and 636 pounds carcass with 6.59 dressing. It graded prime, had 11.45 sq in ribeye area and 0.73 in fat, beating an Angus in ribeye and lean yield.

Drilling Stopped On Well Near Here

Drilling halted late Tuesday afternoon on the oil test by J. B. Gilbreath of Valley Mills just north of Clifton along Meridian Creek. The crew Fulton Place of Waco, plus Mr. Gilbreath, reported a brief strong showing on the drill stem before the line passed the Trinity sands and reached a water well depth for Mrs. John T. Miller's land, part of the Helm Estate.

Miss Carrie Johnson Dies Here February 3

Miss Carrie Johnson aged 80 years 9 months 21 days died at 11 19 p m Sunday February 3 at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home She had lived there since August 10 1957 after moving from Fort Worth She was active in churches in Clifton and taught Sunday School in Clifton College Cove Springs and Trinity Lutheran She is survived by two brothers a sister a nephew and a niece Funeral services were held February 5 at the Sunset Home Chapel with interment in Clifton Cemetery

Funeral services for Paul Kelm held in Hamilton and Shire

Relatives and friends from Clifton attended the funeral for Paul Kelm of Shire. He died Saturday afternoon February 2. Services began at 10:00 Monday at Kiley Funeral Home in Hamilton with further rites at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Shire. Attendees from Clifton included Emma Nichter Erich Prescher Louis Rosentreter Raymond Rosentreter and daughter Nancy and Adolph Schulze.

Bosque County Historical Survey Plans Meet in Courthouse

Bosque County Historical Survey Committee meets in Meridian courthouse on January 25 under Judge Railsback to organize work. Members include chairman Clinton Stewart and publicity chairman William Bertelsen with reappointed veterans and new appointees. A March 2 Norway Mills site event and April 22 courthouse plaque dedication are planned. A revised History of Bosque County by Mark Adams is in progress for June release.

UT Austin Student John Canuteson Selected for European Study Project

John Canuteson a UT Austin junior is among 28 U S students chosen for a 1963 European Study Project funded by Lutheran groups. He receives a 250 scholarship and will study Christian faith across Europe including Finland and Helsinki before returning mid August. The trip runs late June to mid August with travel from Chicago planned around June 25.

C H Reese Dies Suddenly at Clifton February

Clifton resident C H Reese aged 77 died suddenly February 6 at about 6 30 PM from a heart attack after attending an auction and purchasing heifers. Helmer Dahl assisted at the scene and an ambulance conveyed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Funeral services are set for 2 30 PM Friday at the First Baptist Church.

Hayden Westley Completes Printing Course at SHSTC

Hayden Westley son of Mr and Mrs Charles Westley Clifton has completed an 18 month course at the Southwest School of Printing at Sam Houston State Teachers College Huntsville He received training in floorwork letterpress offset notype operation and is now employed full time by the Huntsville Item. Mrs Westley former Miss Valerie McFadden employed as a registered nurse at Huntsville Memorial Hospital.

Clifton cattle sale prices steady to strong hundred head list

About 475 cattle at Clifton Wednesday sold steady to strong with many classes 50 cents higher. Prices ranged from 14 to 33 dollars for cows calves and stockers while hog tops reached 15 dollars to 985.60 per head.
