Hoarded sugar sold by food officials in New York

In New York on January 2 fifteen sacks of sugar hoarded by East Side bookseller Pinci Friedman were sold by the federal food administrator to hospitals, charitable institutions, and about five hundred grocers at five cents. Friedman, under 4,500 bills, is allowed to have obtained the sugar from New Orleans suppliers.

Retailers pledge 50 50 cereal substitutes order

Clifton retailers announce a wartime regulation under President Wilson requiring equal sales of cereal substitutes for each pound of four. The 50 50 basis applies to substitutes like beans, corn meal, oatmeal, rice and other cereals with penalties for violations. Violations must be reported to the Federal Food Administration.

United States Steel Corporation disclosed today that its earnings for the final quarter of 17 totaled 1 744125 after adjustments of 0 060,361 for government war excess profits. Net income for the quarter stood at 45,055,004 with tax payments to the government increased accordingly.

Magazine Euterpean Club Hosts Warm Thursday Meeting

Mrs R F Moore hosted the Magazine Euterpean Club on a Thursday afternoon with an interesting lesson and social hour. Guests included Mrs J N Fallis and Mrs B J Tennison, plus John M Grumland Jr who won favorable notices. A menu of scalloped oysters cheese ball stuffed dates and hot coffee was served.
