County selects two Smile Girls at Waco Fair

Bosque County had both of its entrants chosen among 12 Smile Girls at the Texas State Fair in Waco last week. The pair, Miss Lisa Abercrombie of Clifton and Miss Patti Whitford, emerged from a field of 25 finalists chosen by media at the fair’s press party.

Texas screwworm count rises with Bosque Falls maggots

Cases from Bosque and Falls counties last week raise Texas screwworm total to 10 177 the APHIS program reports. Dr. M J Meadows Jr. says 148 Texas counties are infested as sterile fly release continues to curb the pest. Federal Emergency Joan program meeting set in Clifton

The program to help farmers and ranchers affected by the May 25 hailstorm will be explained at 7 p.m. Thursday in Clifton City Hall Council chambers. Farmers Home Administration and USDA personnel will outline the emergency loan program and ACS staff will describe their emergency program. Applications for physical losses are due by September 29 and production losses by May 3, 1977.

Firearm ban around Whitney Lake prompts cautions

Whitney Lake visitors are told to leave rifles pistols and revolvers at home. The ban aims at safety and comes after requests from nearby subdivisions. The measure was announced by Lt Col Charles J. Tracy and Deputy District Manness of the US Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth. Hunting is allowed at Whitney Lake only from September 1 through February under federal rules.

The Clifton Record will reprint its 1954 Bosque County centennial special section to mark the nation's bicentennial. The project stems from Bosque County Historical Survey chairwoman Mrs. Sam Radde who notes high demand and cites limited advertising space. Burglaries at Gibson's and Nearby Autos Spark Police Action

Gibson's on West Sid Street was burgled during the night of August 18. Fourteen dart guns, 12 boxes of ammunition, and a rifle scope were stolen. $1,200 in merchandise vanished but later recovered. A back storage area breach and two suspects from Dallas and Houston were charged with burglary. CB radios from two cars were also stolen and recovered. two suspects faced auto burglary charges.

Grass Fires Hit Clifton Farms in August Spikes

The Clifton Volunteer Fire Department fought three grass fires in August at T. N. Foster farm at 12:20 p.m. August 13 and 1:45 p.m. return. W. O. Groff farm near Clifton at 9:30 p.m. August 20. Dr. Ernest Erickson farm at 4:50 p.m. August 21 with the blaze under control by 5:50 p.m.

Mickelson Wins West Texas Junior Golf Tourney

Chris Mickelson won the West Texas PGA Junior Golf Tournament held in Big Spring with a 153. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Mickelson of San Angelo and grandson of Mr and Mrs Otis Mickelson of Clifton. He qualified by winning events in Brownwood and San Angelo. The summer tour is sponsored by the West Texas Professional Golfers Association.
