Jackie Ray age about 35 living near Meridian pleaded guilty to bootlegging in Judge McGee’s county court Saturday Aug 9 after a raid by Sheriff John Baxter the night before. He was fined 500 dollars plus 45 dollars costs and sentenced to 90 days in jail probated for two years. Sheriff Baxter said there is no patience with selling beer and liquor to minors in the county and promised arrests.
With a week to go before Clifton hosts the 38th Central Texas Fair and 19th Rodeo entries lag. As of Wednesday 169 livestock entries and 34 Home Economics Exhibits have been received, with judging set for Aug 28.
Turnersville dedicates the Turnersville Housing Project with a Saturday barbecue at Turnersville Tabernacle. Guest speaker will be Congress W. R. Poage. Barbecue supper at 7 15. tickets $1 75 from Clifford Worthy at Standefer Chevrolet Clifton. Master of Ceremonies Peck Tharp. State Rep Bob Salter introduces Poage. Open house precedes event.
Superintendent Kent Appleby announces the 1969 70 term in Clifton with four new hires Miss Janice Collins Mrs Lee Stanley and Hans Wimberly. Registration schedules start Aug 28 for seniors juniors sophomores freshmen and junior high. First graders must bring birth records and vaccination certificates.
Frank Capps about 66 was found dead in his Walnut Springs home on Tuesday August 18 with bruises to the head hips and elbows and disarrayed furniture. Sheriff John Baxter said an autopsy was performed and indicated natural causes though fluid in the lungs and possible light stroke were noted. Texas Rangers assisted and all prime suspects were cleared by polygraph tests. investigators believe no foul play though the case remains open.
