Mrs. E. S. Parks and Arthur Spurgeon were driving from Womack toward Clifton when a car behind flashed flames in the motor compartment. Firefighters arrived from Clifton to extinguish the blaze, and the foreign car was declared a total loss by the insurer.
The Bosque County Home Demonstration Club invites the public to its annual picnic on Thursday August 17 at the National Guard Armory Clifton. Members are urged to attend. The program includes craft demonstrations by L C Walters and a health film with a talk by Miss Lucy Ray Burrus and craft sessions in the afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Henry Saadallah of Commerce visited Clifton this past weekend with her mother Mrs Margaret Ringness. They were joined last Friday by his brother Dean Saadallah.
Mr and Mrs Harvey Richardson announce a son Timothy Scott born August 2 1961 at Clifton hospital weighing 5 pounds 2 ounces. A daughter Lisa Dawn born August 2 1961 to Mr and Mrs Henry C Sanders in Goodall and Witcher Clinic Hospital weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces. Mr and Mrs Louis M Reed announce a son Joseph Dean born August 5 1961 at Clifton hospital weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces. Grandparents named L P Reed Meridian and B W Hardie. Maternal great grandmother J W Hardie, also of Clifton City.
Mrs. Johnnie C. Jenson of Route 1 Meridian aged 55 died between 9 30 and 10 00 am Monday August 7 in Clifton hospital after years of ill health and a sudden blood clot Funeral services were held at 3 30 pm Tuesday in Meridian area with Rev Chet C Henson officiating Her life included time in Clifton Waco and Meridian and service at Morris Street Methodist Church later St John s The Jenson family farmed near Coolidge and near Meridian before moving to Clifton Meridian area entries note no children and a sunny disposition cherished by relatives and friends
Clifton High School juniors and seniors are invited to a Sunday meeting at 4:00 P.M. in the CHS gym to set two a day practice times for the season. About 50 players, 14 returning lettermen, join Head Coach Aubrey Roberts with assistants Dayton Whitehurst and Richard Liardon. The Cubs open against Hillsboro September 1.
Clifton Telephone Company announces the distribution this week of a new directory with about 175 more listings than last year. The Bosque Memorial Museum building is featured this year while Norse patrons appear in Clifton for the first time.
Clifton Public Schools sent teachers to a Reading Workshop at Hillsboro High School Library in Hillsboro. The event ran Monday and Tuesday with 183 Central Texas teachers enrolled and instructor Gladys Bartholomew from the University of Oklahoma emphasizing Phonetic Keys to Reading. Clifton attendees included Elsie Coston Oranella Eckert Otto Gangsher Joe Dahl Lawrence Ringness E E Schow Ottis Tyler and Bosque County elementary supervisor Marshall Bonds.
Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Nuckols and family spent a brief weekend visit in Clifton with friends. They joined the Eldon Zimmerman family at Reddy's Retreat and Mrs. Nuckols visited her mother Mrs. J. W. Townley at the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home.
On District Governors Day at Clifton Lions Club W B McPherson of Hamilton spoke to members retiring District Governor O E Pierson of Clifton. McPherson reported on Texas Lions at the Atlantic City convention and Lions Camp Kerrville progress. Pierson thanked helpers, received gifts, and was named International Counselor. A UT education course on Selling will visit Clifton September 11 to 14. The Albrechts visited Fort Worth and Betty will join Clifton Saturday.
Tom Greenwade and his father J Walton Greenwade of Meridian attended the Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association Directors meeting in Fredericksburg on Friday night August 5 as part of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Award program requirements. The note urges Bosque County farmers to submit soil samples to the College Station soil testing lab a 2.00 test and highlights fall seeding timing and new soil testing information sheets to improve fertilizer recommendations. The Texas Poultry Improvement Association and allied groups will meet in Houston August 22-23 at the Rice Hotel to discuss market and consumption developments.
Zeda Anne Jameson of Clifton defends the Bosque County Farm Bureau Queen title at the Clifton City Hall contest on August 1. She will represent Bosque County at the District Queen Contest in Lampasas on August 25 and at the Central Texas Fair and Rodeo Parade in September. The event featured Mary Sue Reichert as runner up and Sue Pennington the 1960 Queen.
Miss Minnie Ragsdale age 84 4 15 of Valley Mills died about 8 PM Thursday August 3 at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home after residing at Clifton Hall since July 1 1959 Born March 29 1877 in Bosque County she is survived only by distant cousins Funeral services were held August 5 at the First Baptist Church Valley Mills conducted by Reverend Hugh Durham with burial in Valley Mills Cemetery.
Mrs P M Read of Dallas has been under medical treatment at Clifton hospital since August 8. Last weekend Frank M Smith and son Gene Craig of Angleton visited her, along with C M Stringfellow and family. Gene, E D Smith family, and J W Thiele plus Leon Eckert and Ronny Thomas fished four days at Port Aransas, reporting good trout catches. The Jacob Wilson family and Valerie and Verna McFadden visited Houston and relatives including Curtis Wilson and family. Visitors from Monahans, Mr and Mrs J C Newland and children, attended church services in town and Karen and Barbara sang with the choir.
John Canuteson son of Mr and Mrs Oren J Canuteson Sr of Clifton will join 19 other youths as The American Lutheran Church delegate at the North American Ecumenical Youth Assembly at the University of Michigan August 16 23. The gathering draws about 2000 young leaders from 40 plus communions in Canada and the U S to study and discuss being entrusted with the message of reconciliation. Sponsors include World Council of Churches and related bodies. Mrs E B Hilbun of Walnut Springs has been a patient in Clifton hospital since August 5.
Mr and Mrs John M Musselman and family bought Hafer Grocery at Womack from Henry and Mrs Hafer who ran the business for 35 years. They took over on Wednesday July 26. The family of five came from Waco after a stay in Calmyra Pennsylvania where they dairy farmed. Mrs Musselman is a Texan from Hamilton County. The Hafers moved to a Garnersville area farm near Womack.
Several Bosque County men joined a Gatesville gathering at 10 00 o clock Wednesday for a five county Advisory Committee meeting of the Waco Production Credit Association. Attendees include T N Foster Lynn White Fritz Prescher and Leon Andres.
Larry Grimland son of Mr and Mrs Allen Grimland has been selected for the All-State Team to play in Monterrey Mexico August 13 14 and 15 He is a pitcher for the Big State Baseball Camp in Meridian and will likely pitch for the Big State team The Big State Caravan departs Waco Friday at 6 30 pm and Mr and Mrs Grimland will also travel to Monterrey to attend the games Mrs A O Bruce of Glen Rose has been in Clifton hospital since August 8 for medical treatment.
Clifton High School band director Bill Brown announces the first band meeting for seventh through twelfth graders will be August 24 at 7 30 PM in the new band hall. The earlier August 14 date was postponed due to material delays. Band Parents Association members will also meet on August 24.
At the Vocational Agricultural Teachers Annual Convention in Austin on August 9, John E. Lockhart and The Clifton Record received the Distinguished Service Award before about 1,000 ag teachers. The plaque honors leadership in promoting vocational agriculture and Future Farmer programs through targeted newspaper publicity. Baldridge Jr. accepted for The Clifton Record, with Corby receiving three plaques for public relations work.
J W Whatley learns of his father E W Whatley’s death at about 10 45 Monday night in Iowa Park. The 93 year old resident had lived in the town for years and is survived by four sons including J W Whatley Clifton Tex Charlie Amarillo Jesse Bowie and Clarence Abilene. A nonessential portion notes visits by family members to Mr Cowen and his wife in the previous weekend.
Thursday morning prices from Clifton show eggs at 30c per dozen for large, 24c for A medium and B large, 14c for pullets, 15c for cracks. Cream 40c a pound. Grains include oats 64c per bushel, milling wheat 1.80, spring wheat 1.50, rye 1.65 per cwt, barley 87c, yellow corn 1.10. Cattle run about 550 head with steady market. Slaughter steers 22-24, yearlings 17-22, butcher calves 22-24.5, cows 14-15.5, canners 10-14.5, bulls 17-18.5, stocker steers 22-25, stocker calves 25-28, cows and calves 140-225. Hog tops 18.25-18.50, lamb top 15.00.
