Mesquite and Brush Control Aids Texas Ranches

The Spur Experiment Station reports mesquite control yields about one dollar per acre yearly in cattle gains. Water is the limiting factor as mesquite needs 1700–1900 pounds of water per pound of dry material, while grasses require 300–400 pounds. Chemical and aerial treatments using 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T are detailed with precautions. The ASCA offers cost share up to 5.00 per acre for ground control and 1.50 per acre for aerial control of mesquite.
