Clifton Voters Face City and School Elections

Voters in Clifton Bosque County plan to vote Saturday on city governance and separate school board contests. Clifton City Council incumbents run unopposed, while a special election asks if Clifton should retain the city manager form of government. Ballots will be bilingual English Spanish.

Land Commissioner Armstrong to Speak at Clifton Chamber Banquet

Land Commissioner Bob Armstrong will address the Clifton Chamber of Commerce at the fifth annual banquet and general membership meeting. The event is 7 p.m. Friday April 9 at the Clifton Civic Center auditorium. Armstrong, first elected in 1970, highlighted aggressive land management policies and coastal development planning. He linked state oil and gas lease income to public education funds and noted milestones in environmental safeguards and royalty reforms. Armstrong’s career includes public service as a Texas representative, legal work, conservation awards, and leadership in planetary land and coastal programs. He is married to Shanon Harris with three children and enjoys outdoor activities.

Breaks Reported at Local Stores Include Paint and Radio

Police Chief Alvin James reports last week a break at Selios Paint 215 West 3rd St netted ten cases of paint and $20 in change after entry by prying a window and forcing a lock. A 23 channel citizen band radio was stolen from White Auto Store 410 West 5th St. A window at a coin operated laundry on South Highway 6 was broken, possibly by a motor vehicle.

Draft board operations end May eight Selective Service Board 716 ceases

Alvin E. Amundson of Clifton serves on Selective Service Board No. 716 for Bosque Brath Hood Johnson and Somervell Counties. Col Melvin N. Glantz said all draft boards are being discontinued nationwide on that date after closures on February 28. Texas has 525 members across 96 boards.

Former Clifton Resident Wins Teaching Award

Mrs. Thomas Bedford formerly George Ann Bronstad of Clifton was honored at an awards reception receiving a Teacher of the Year plaque for her La Porte school district. The award recognized her school work and community service with the Mental Retardation Association. She lives in Deer with her husband and three children.

Ballot wording explained for Clifton city manager vote

Voters in Clifton go to City Hall from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday to decide if the city will keep the city manager form of government. Ballots are printed in English and Spanish and guide voters to mark “for” if abandoning the plan or “against” abandonment by placing an X in the indicated squares.

Savings bonds sales in Bosque County January update

Bosque County sold savings bonds totaling 5759 dollars in January, reaching a small portion of the year’s goal. The statewide 1976 Texas goal is 272.4 million dollars, with January sales at 24119 300 compared to 1975 January’s 23290 606.

Neils Creek League Plans Meetings and Divisions

The Neils Creek League will meet Monday April 5 at 7 20 p m in the Clifton Civic Center to set team counts for girls softball and boys baseball and discuss a pre season tournament and regular season. Officers elected for 1976 are Calvin Rueter president Joe Crawson vice president and Jerry Sather secretary treasurer.

Nine more enter Lake Whitney Beauty Pageant entries rise

Whitney hosts April 30 May 1 pageant at Lake Whitney High School with nine new contestants boosting totals. Contestants span multiple towns led by Whitney Laguna Park Meridian and Cleburne with divisions for senior petite and junior ages. Miss Lake Whitney earns an expense paid trip to El Paso for Miss Texas Universe and prizes for winners.

Bosque County Rotary Sponsors First Annual Talent Show

The Bosque County Clifton Rotary Club hosts the first annual talent show on Friday April 2 at 7 30 p m in Bettis Auditorium Clifton Elementary School. Proceeds fund scholarships for Bosque County high school graduates. Master of ceremonies is Rotarian Calvin Rueter with Joe Bryan as chairman.

Bosque County residents carry about 1500 in installment debt per family for home improvements and big purchases. National debt totals 161.82 billion with auto loans making up about one third. The local burden averages 125 monthly, or 15 of net income, and most borrowers are managing obligations satisfactorily.
