McAfee uses state funds for pro Penrose ads in newspapers

Auditor General Powell scaled payments for constitutional amendment ads, cutting many bills by over half. Last year the state appropriated 175000 while McAfee favored papers received 117230.10, with large publishers like Clearfield Spirit and Punxsutawney papers among recipients. Powell’s rates may cover almost half the appropriation for this coming fall.

Italians onPennsy: Italians Employed On The Pennsylvania Railroad

The Pennsylvania Railroad employs about 11 000 Italians on its lines east of Pittsburgh and Erie, forming over one fourteenth of the total 140 000 workers. Twenty years ago Italians were mostly laborers. now many hold trusted roles, aided by English proficiency. Seventy five Italian track foremen and 187 assistant foremen illustrate upward mobility, with progress in machine shops, foremen, and leaders. The Manhattan division census lists Italians as conductors enginemen clerks foremen assistant foremen stenographers telegraph operators signalmen painters riggers watchmen shophands stoker operators steady workers coal cleaners coal trimmers etc. If you have anything to sell, buy the columns of this paper.

Roosevelt to Visit Pennsylvania in Fall Campaign

Gifford Pinchot derides reports that Theodore Roosevelt will stay away from Pennsylvania this fall. He confirms the colonel will enter the state to campaign aggressively, disputing Penrose allies and stressing their opposing principles. Pinchot backs Amos Pinchot in opposing Perkins and says Perkins has no role in the Pennsylvania fight. Osceola Mills Tabernacle Crowds Hear Rev Johnson

Large crowds filled the enlarged tabernacle to hear Mr Johnson preach three sermons. 69 joined the altar during the service with 875 converts since the campaign began. Miss Killian spoke on Queen Esther at the Presbyterian church. Upcoming events include P O S of A night Tuesday and Knights of Mystic Chain and Women's nights Friday.

Teachers Examinations Schedule Across County

The following teachers examinations will be held in various towns from June 20 to July 19 starting at 9 a.m. Applicants must be of good moral character and at least eighteen. Provisional entrants may join the professional test with requirements including a 90 percent average and 60 percent minimum. Borough Ordinance Restricts After Hours Billiard Rooms

Clearfield borough enacts an ordinance restricting billiard rooms pool rooms bowling alleys and shooting galleries to be closed from midnight to six a m. Violators face fines from five to fifty dollars and possible thirty days jail. Approved April 15 1914 by Chief Burgess Hobart Callahan and President of Council Frederick Kerr.

Social affairs at Mrs Lee's West Front street party

Mrs Charles Lee entertained numerous friends at West Front street honoring Mrs Stewart of Harrisburg. The porch and house held card tables. First prize wicker tray went to Mrs Roland Wright, second prize a box of correspondence cards for Mrs Emmett Harder. A luncheon followed, with tables adorned by home grown roses.

Entertained Bees by Carrie Root in Clearfield

Miss Carrie Root hosted about 25 members of the Clearfield hive, Ladies of the Maccabees, at her Fourth street home Friday evening. Plans were made for a special meeting Tuesday in the Red Men’s hall where the Knights of Maccabees will surrender their room. Deputy great commander Miss Belle M. Doughty will direct new floor work at that meeting.

Sewer On Spruce Street Authorized In Clearfield Borough

The town council of Clearfield Pennsylvania authorizes a public sanitary sewer on Spruce Street in the Second Ward from near the Lawrence township line at Marshall Street to the Susquehanna River. The sewer will be terra cotta, eight inches to Marshall Street, twelve inches to the river, with costs assessed back to abutting property owners.

State Agriculture to Count Self Tilling and Tenanted Farms

The state department of agriculture is gathering figures from county authorities on the number of farmers tilling their own land and the number of tenanted farms. The data, supplementing last year’s census, will be issued as a bulletin with statistics on farm numbers that have declined and are available for leasing.
