Pinchot Denounces Water Power Bill

Washington July 27 An indefensible water power bill approved by the president but designed to give waterpower interests control of actual and potential water power in navigable streams of the United States without compensation to the public is under consideration in the house of representatives. It is the Adamson amendment to the general dam act, pushed by a bipartisan group led by Underwood and Adamson on the Democratic side and Stevens of Minnesota on the Republican side. Gifford Pinchot, president of the national conservation association, says the administration endorses the amended form and calls it a surrender to power interests. He says it does not protect consumers within states from extortion and would take back public rights after the fifty-year grant, forcing government to take over key electric plants to regain control and barring amendment unless conditions are violated.
