Miss Gloria Cleaver Crowned Southwest Iowa Queen

About 700 attend the Clarinda Lions Beauty Pageant where Gloria Cleaver 20 Shenandoah was named Miss Southwest Iowa 1958. She will compete in the Miss Iowa Pageant at Clear Lake July 26 28 and could advance to Miss America. runners up include Shari Evans Yvonne Funkhouser Carolyn Kay Johnson Connie Hughes. Awards include scholarships trophies gowns and crowns for all finalists.

Ballots Mailed for ASC Elections in Page County Townships

Ballots for the annual ASC community committee elections in Page County townships will be mailed Friday. Eligible voters have until July 8 to return ballots using postage-free envelopes. Each township lists candidates and write-ins are allowed. The county convention on July 27 will elect county officers and delegates.

Mrs Hampton Wintermute Honored by Taylor County 4-H

Mrs Hampton Wintermute received an honorary pin at Taylor County girls 4-H Rally Day directed by Mrs Roy Selley and the Gay Guss Girls and Holt Lassies. It marks the 23rd year of honoring an outstanding 4-H worker, recognizing eight years of service as leader or committee member.

Thirteen Scout Troop 203 Camp Wakonda Week

Thirteen members of Scout Troop 203 from Clarinda camped a week at Wakonda near Griswold. The group included Benny Wardlow Bill Lisle Rick Pfander Ray Russ Tom Adreon Yollie Young Mike McCoy Larry Mace Gary Hookham Weldon Hall Jeff Smith John Dorl and Bruce Stevens. Leaders driving the scouts up were Bob Smith Harley McCoy Merl Stevens and Edwin Lisle. Scoutmaster Art Kelley Frank Hall and others saw them off and back Saturday.

Clarinda Methodists Prepare New Park Area Work Day

Clarinda Methodists schedule a Tuesday work day at a new park area northeast of Clarinda. All able members should meet at the church at 1 pm with tools. the group will work long hours to prepare the site for picnic camp worship and other use. A sack lunch is advised for the supper hour. Those unable to attend afternoon work should join at the camp for supper and brick hauling and shelter work.

Mrs Jessie Katharine Swanson will be guest soloist with the Clarinda Municipal Band on Thursday evening. She will sing Panis Angelicus after a background of church choir and club solo work. A clarinet quartet of Orville Shockey Harriet James John Taggart and Gilbert Sunderland will perform The Four Woodsmen by Clair Johnson.

Mayor William C Hemphill announced a tornado alert warning plan for Clarinda. In a sighting, a long continuous fire whistle blast will signal danger, clearly distinct from the usual short fire signals.

Southwest Iowa towns adopt siren blast for storm warnings

Bedford and Hamburg join area towns with new tornado warning plans. Bedford will rely on the state police radio network with callouts to the sheriff for funnel sightings. a single continuous siren blast will warn residents. Hamburg to use a two minute continuous siren for severe weather with direct Omaha Weather Bureau phone notices to firemen.

Lions Eye Bank drive expands as 24 join Iowa program

Burlington reports 24 Clarinda Lions and community members sign eye donation cards for the Iowa Lions Eye Bank. Chairman Ossie Hertel announces a new 16 page brochure mailed to 11 000 Iowa Lions members detailing registrations, corneal transplants since 1955, Leader dog program, rehabilitation efforts, and Braille aid.

Paving Target Date Remains July Fifteenth

City Manager R H van Deusen says the Jensen and Krage Construction Co aims to finish paving by July 15 barring bad weather. Parking lanes are done and paving begins on State Street, moving south along the west side of 16th Street. The west rail line half will open for two way traffic Tuesday morning with detours adjusted to 14th and Grant. Don’t be a litterbug as crews finish tasks.

Blanchard Woman Wins Second Jackpot Prize Here

A Blanchard woman, Mrs Frank Ridgeway, won the second prize in the Clarinda jackpot drawing held at the courthouse. She chooses from 17 prizes worth up to 269.95. The event advances toward a final big prize of a 1957 Chevrolet to coupon holders during a street project celebration.

Final Red Cross drive total for East Page County

The 1957 East Page County Red Cross fund drive totaled 6114.81 dollars, announced at the Linderman Hotel, with J Y Biggs presenting the treasurer's report. Of the amount, 2209.28 covered the national organization, while the year’s major costs included 1402.23 for home service and 1082.75 for blood and 241.53 for water safety and first aid programs. The year ended with a working balance of 1954.29. Blood program reports show 250 pints received over four Bloodmobile visits, and 593 donors contributed in the county.

Red Cross honors at East Page County chapter meeting

The East Page County American Red Cross annual meeting featured two awards. Lou Nordland presented a certificate of citation to J Y Biggs for fund drive chairmanship and a meritorious service plaque to the Clarinda Herald Journal for publicity of Red Cross drives and activities.
