Grads of 37 Plan Saturday Reunion at Clarinda Country Club

The class of 1937 resumes after 20 years with a reunion at the Clarinda Country Club Saturday evening. Wendell Otte serves as president and 49 reservations are already secured for the dinner at 7 pm. The event will include a social hour for those arriving later.

Fair Talent Show Committee Named at Page County Fair

The Page County Fair announces its Home Talent Show committee led by Mr and Mrs Glen Carlson Essex. Other members include Mr and Mrs Maynard Burch Mr and Mrs Bob Christensen Gilbert Sunderman and Ralph Hillman with further appointments to follow. A July 2 meeting at the Farm Bureau office will begin plans for the August event featuring livestock parade greased pig contest and Queen of the Furrows contest along with the Home Talent Show.

Legislator Seeks End to Job Confusion in State Agencies

State Rep Vern Lisle urged the Iowa Board of Control to align board personnel with other state departments to avoid “confusion” over salaries and job classifications. He plans legislation if a special session is called. The move comes as the legislature trimmed the Personnel Director’s powers and a party shift to Democrats awaits July 1.

Clarinda Lutheran Candidate Seeks Regional LLL Director

Mr and Mrs Alfred Sump plan to attend the 40th Lutheran Laymen's League convention in St Louis from June 30 to July 3. Al Sump is president of Iowa District West and seeks reelection as regional director for the international LLL, a region spanning Iowa East and West and Minnesota. A Lutheran hour rally features Dr Hawthorne. The Sumps may attend a Braves versus Cardinals game or the Forest Park open air opera Monday night.

Free rides for mental patients at Friday carnival

Patients from the Clarinda Mental Health Institute will receive free rides to Moore's carnival Friday afternoon. Legion Commander Marion Hasberger, Lyle Fann, and public relations director Mrs A C Voth organize the effort. Transportation volunteers are urged, with rides departing the institute at 1 30 pm from the Legion Pool grounds.

Sunday drills prep local guard unit for summer camp

Clarinda Heavy Mortar Company of the Iowa National Guard holds three Sunday drills instead of evening sessions. Capt Ronald Schenck notes eight hour drills occurred June 2 and 23, with another in July, ahead of annual summer training at Camp Ripley Minnesota beginning July 26 and returning August 10. Lt Russell Elliott returns after completing basic infantry officers course at Ft Benning Georgia.

Infant Son of Schrodt Dies in Bedford

Charles Edgar Schrodt two months old died at his Bedford home Wednesday morning. Survived by parents five sisters and grandmother Mrs Archie Webb of Clarinda. Funeral at Wetmore Funeral Home Bedford Thursday afternoon with burial in Bedford Cemetery.

Planning Zoning Commission Seeks New City Maps

City Planning and Zoning officials asked council for new city maps at a Wednesday meeting. Chet Lee urged replacement of the 1914 map. funding not requested this year. Wall map scaled 100 feet to the inch. table maps 400 feet to the inch.

Don Williams Elected At State Short Course

Don Williams named to state 4-H short course officers with Jerry Dale as vice president Roger Applegate as secretary treasurer and Robert Eggers as historian. He returns from National 4-H Conference in Washington DC and earned a $250 freshman scholarship at Iowa State College. Williams, a Villisca High School graduate, led livestock judging at the Iowa State Fair and held multiple 4-H and FFA offices. Page County delegation, including John Hunter and Ron Rubin, will return to Clarinda Thursday.

Lions to Observe 11th Anniversary at Charter Night

Clarinda Lions Club marks its eleventh anniversary with a Charter Night dinner at the Clarinda Country Club Monday at 6 30 pm. Officers for 1957 58 to be installed. club notes more than 90 members and a year of service including beauty pageant, surplus commodity support, food processing for Welfare, toy drive, light bulb sale, sight and community projects.

Clarinda Junior College Seeks Applicants for Practical Nursing Class

The School of Practical Nursing at Clarinda Junior College is already testing applicants for the September class though an opening date is not fixed. Eight applications have been received this week. tests occur once numbers justify. The class mirrors past years with age 18 to 55, at least 10th grade education, and good health.

Miss Southwest Iowa Appears on Omaha TV Program

Gloria Cleaver of Shenandoah crowned Miss Southwest Iowa 1958 appeared on KMTV Omaha television Monday. She will represent southwest Iowa in the Miss Iowa Pageant at Clear Lake next month and was interviewed by Marianne Peters on Conversations. Dick Davidson of Clarinda, pageant chairman, appeared with her and Cleaver sang two numbers from the pageant.
