Southwest Iowans enjoyed brief relief from 103 degree heat as Tuesday night storms dropped up to 2.1 inches in spots and caused roof damage near Clarinda. Officials report 1.25 inches at the city water fork and note cloud seeding discussions while water pumping records surge.
Sheriff reports two separate early week wrecks near Clarinda left no injuries. Gerald Bentley 21 of McPherson Kansas lost control on Highway 71 Sunday, vehicle a total loss after rolling into a ditch. Robert Anderson 20 of Shambaugh ran off Highway 2 Tuesday when a wheel dropped and his car veered into a field. minor damage.

Ten contestants from Clarinda Shenandoah Coin College Springs Sidney Hamburg Emerson and other towns compete for the Miss Southwest Iowa crown at the Clarinda Theatre on Thursday June 28 at 8 pm. Winners advance to Miss Iowa and potentially Miss America with scholarships trophies gowns and bouquets.
Rollie Livingston says over half of 100 patron tickets are sold for the Lions Southwest Iowa Beauty Pageant at Clarinda Theatre on June 28. Patrons receive a reserved front-seat in a special section and recognition in a program. Lions club members and the Herald-Journal counter sell remaining tickets.
Ken Jones, pool manager, announced the Legion swimming pool will reopen Thursday afternoon after a one day shutdown for chemical trouble. Legion officials report attendance above last year after three weeks of operation. Membership and season tickets are available at Foster's Furniture Store and the pool, with post tickets ending June 20.
County wide discussion on the US Department of Agriculture Soil Bank 1956 acreage reserve provisions was held in City Hall basement with Quentin Parkison and Cliff Spies presenting. Officials from ASC SCS Farm Bureau Extension and other agencies reviewed yields and law details ahead of two public county meetings June 22 and June 25 at Clarinda and Shenandoah high schools respectively.
Legion will not charge a fee for pool use by students in Red Cross swimming and life saving lessons this summer. Commander Marion Hash berger said the Board of Directors voted against the fee and pool facilities will be a community service. Free instruction is provided by East Page County Red Cross Chapter with lessons starting Monday at 8 45 am. Enrollment is Friday and Saturday 9 to 11 am.
Chief of Police C E Reynolds asks local equestrians to refrain from riding in the city. He cites danger to riders and to motorists and pedestrians. Reports say horses are ridden on sidewalks yards and terraces in violation of city ordinances.
Claude Cooper of Creston, Methodist district superintendent, toured Clarinda on arranging visitation training for 19 seminary students from the United States. Eighteen arrived in Leon to start work in the area with Rev Howard Adams at Yorktown and Norwich. One student cada from the Philippines and one from Japan participate. The 10 week period is part of a general evangelism program by the Methodist Church.
Barbara Butler nine of Clarinda won a charcoal grill in Cook's Father's Day prize drawing Saturday night. Margaret Joy Welch of Clarinda won the camera outfit from the men’s store. Registrations move to a national contest with Puritan Shirt Co offering fifty thousand dollars in prizes. Red Cross welfare messages totaled about 4500 daily for service members last year.
Lions club marks its tenth anniversary with a July 2 charter night at Clarinda Country Club. Guest speaker Carroll Mitchell, former charter member and Farm Bureau Spokesman editor, will attend. Installation of 1956 57 officers and perfect attendance awards planned, with music by Dennis Wilson trio and special favors for ladies.
Mayor W C Hemphill announced four appointments to the Public Library Board of Trustees. Three will serve six-year terms beginning July 1: Mrs Don D Drake Arthur Greenwood and Dr Fred Sperry. Drake succeeds herself pending the unexpired term of Mrs Ervin Spunangle. Greenwood and Sperry replace Lewis Wells and Les McCalla. Mrs R J Swanson fills the unexpired term of the late W F Stipe, expiring June 20 1958.
Clarinda Recreation Program extends into third week with craft classes from 2 to 4 pm daily attended fairly during hot weather. Peewee baseball teams schedule Wednesday 6 pm at the park diamond with pairings announced by Coach Allen Fann. Jerseys funded by Hawley Drugs Opitz Motor Co Hans Morgan and the American Legion post.
Cla rinda Independent School District will pay 995 dollars to Champney Waterproofing Co of Topeka Kansas for the demolition and removal of the old McKinley school building. The bid was the lowest from seven bids across four states. Local labor will be used except for supervisory work.
In 103 degree heat the ladies of the Reformed Presbyterian Church south of Clarinda prepared a fine meal for Clarinda Kiwanis members and spouses. The crowd enjoyed a cooling spell at meeting time. Orville Thompson, president, praised the gathering before Clinton Turner introduced speaker Jim Turner of Chattanooga Tenn.
The Fremont and Page County dairymen sponsor an annual smorgasbord this Thursday evening at the Shenandoah Armory. Dinner will be served by the Fremont County 4 H girls under Mrs Ward Scott. A dairy princess contest is a featured part of the program.
