Twenty five more added to jackpot at courthouse drawing

Seventy five people have a stake in the big jackpot after transferring 25 more names to the jackpot at the courthouse Friday afternoon. Friday’s drawing starts at 4 pm with another secondary prize to be given away. The final prize, a 1957 Chevrolet, will be awarded during the celebration reopening the pavement project.

Local Miss Southwest Iowa 1958 Pageant Set in Clarinda

Fourteen southwest Iowa girls vie for Miss Southwest Iowa 1958 at the Clarinda Theatre. Contestants will be judged on personality, evening gown, bathing suit, and talent, with scholarships, an all expense paid trip to Clear Lake, and a Miss Iowa preliminary trip at stake. Reigning queen Connie Stewart of Shenandoah will crown the winner.

City Council approves plans for special assessment works

The council authorized plans and specifications for upcoming special assessment improvements to be made this summer after a public hearing at City Hall. They ordered a plat for annexation, retained legal counsel for a water system revenue bond, and approved several zoning, construction, and utility actions. One objector attended the hearing, Mrs Jessie Kretzer, who opposed curb and gutter work on Lincoln from L to 10th Street.

J C Penney manager to take over Ft Morgan store

TO MANAGE COLORADO STORE will report June 26 to take over managership of the big J C Penney department store at Ft Morgan, Colo, marking another advancement with the chain store firm. Mr Katzenbarger came here in October of 1952 from Albia, where he had been Penney store manager. He has been with the firm 21 years, with three years leave of absence while serving in the US Navy during World War II. He has been active in community affairs here, especially the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club. The successor is not yet known but is expected here this week to be oriented by the departing manager.

Recreation Center In Full Swing At Fairgrounds Park

Clarinda’s supervised recreation program resumes at Fairgrounds Park this Monday under director Harold Halder Derstad. The playground will run 9 to 12 mornings 1:30 to 4:30 afternoons and 7 to 9 evenings with no charge or age limit. Rogue and croquet courts were flooded but other facilities are ready. three new games are en route including a tots darts style game a balance-on-wheels and a tether ball setup.

Mrs Pat Johnson to headline Clarinda Band concert

Mrs Pat Johnson of Villisca will be the featured vocalist with the Clarinda Municipal Band Thursday evening. She has appeared on radio and TV and studied voice at Glendale Junior College and the University of Nebraska. She will sing Wanting You, with Junior High Trio Jean Livingston and Carol Engstrom performing Slippery Gentlemen by Harold Walters.

John Christensen Receives Navigator's Wings in Texas

Lieutenant John J Christensen of Blanchard earned the silver navigator wings at Ellington AFB Houston during graduation exercises. The 42 week course completed. A 1956 Iowa State College graduate he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

The Hopkins Journal reports a carnival on June 19 organized by 6 to 10 year old girls from the Fun Club. The Mendenhall home east of Hopkins serves as grounds for the midway and the usual big events.

Five distinguished men and women are charged with selecting Miss Southwest Iowa 1958 in a Lions Pageant to be held at Clarinda Theatre Thursday at 8 pm. Justin Brown, Drake University admissions director, previously at MacMurray College and Stephens College, is a MU graduate. James Hogue, Tarkio College Public Relations director, formerly a recreational therapist at Menninger Foundation, is an acclaimed actor and Alpha Psi Omega member. Earle Moss, Northwest Missouri State College band director, holds BS and MA from NYU with a focus on composition and trumpet.

Close Call as Car Dives Into Schenck's Lake

Mrs Melvin Srite and her daughter escaped when the car slid off a dike into Schenck's Lake Sunday evening. The 1954 Chevrolet, waterlogged and with a dented top, remained undamaged aside from upholstery. Dick Robinson and Evans Motors provided gear while Clarinda Boat Club members helped retrieve the vehicle from the lake.

Laning to Receive BD at Garrett in 100th Commencement

Television boost for nurse school on Clarinda station

KFEQ TV will publicize the School of Practical Nursing of Clarinda Junior College this week. Three Clarindans Mrs Ann White coordinator, Mrs Bill Bench charter graduate, and Ted Poteet executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce will be interviewed on the Esther Donat show between 3 30 and 4 30 pm. Arrangements were made by Poteet, a school advisory committee member. Recruiting publicity also via 12 half minute spots on Radio KMA Shenandoah and Town Crier ad in Herald Journal.

Lions Entertain Patients at Mental Institute Dinner

Clarinda Lions plan an annual dinner meeting at the Mental Health Institute employes’ cafeteria tonight at 6 30 pm. President Jack Douthit notes five Clarinda school musicians will perform under Nelson E Crow, vocal music director. Dennis Wilson plays a new electric organ purchased by the state institution during dinner.
