The Clarinda Herald-Journal received an honorable mention in the National Editorial Association Better Newspaper Contests for 1956. It will get a plaque for general excellence in weekly papers with 2,500 to 6,000 in circulation, competing with Maui News Cullman Times and Downers Grove Reporter. Judges praised increased use of pictures and better press work across entrants. There were 1,728 entries from 45 states and Hawaii.

Janet Lavely sixteen year old Shenandoah Tri-M's 4-H Club member was elected president of the Page County girls 4-H organization at Rally Day in Clarinda High School. Page County Republicans posted 2,648 votes while Democrats tallied 522 in the primary. Incumbents led in three Republican state races. Sheriff Stanley Edgar won 2,004 to 646, Clerk C Apple 1,717 to 862, and the close county coroner contest pitted Fred Hackett 947 to 933 for Dr W G Kuehn. Results from 26 precincts showed no upsets, with Shenandoah and nearby townships contributing the closest margins.

Recreation Program Off to Good Start in Clarinda
Clarinda's new free recreation program, directed by Grant Whitney, opened strongly this week. About 80 youngsters attended Monday afternoon, 96 used Fairgrounds Park facilities Tuesday afternoon, and 50 adults joined Monday night with 35 on Tuesday evening. Peewee baseball for boys up to 11 appears most popular, with 41 peewees and 13 midgets under Allen Fann, who seeks 15 more midget players and more pee wees. Four peewee teams are set: Dodgers, Yankees, White Sox, and Cardinals.

The State Highway Commission will open bids in Ames on Tuesday for resurfacing gravel on 40 miles of Page County roads.
