The ASC office in Page County outlines farmer eligibility for maximum price support on 1956 corn and participation in the soil bank plan. Every farm with a corn acreage allotment will have a corn soil bank base acreage 17.8 percent greater than the earlier fixed allotment.
Harry S Storey of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation will hold a meeting in Shenandoah high school auditorium Thursday at 8 pm to explain the soil bank program and how farmers can participate this year. All farmers urged to attend.
County ASC office calculates corn soil bank acreages for each farm and presents four possible plans for raising corn this crop year. Compliance with production adjustment standards qualifies farmers for a national average price support of 1.50 dollars per bushel. failure to meet requirements may affect eligibility.
The weekly concert at the fairgrounds amphitheatre continues with Mrs John Brummett as vocalist performing two Broadway numbers from South Pacific. Direct or Richard Mowery presents sacred pieces each evening and a trumpet trio including Byrle Carr Dale Bellairs Marvin Negley participates.
Veterans committee laments poor response from flower providers for decorating over 320 graves at Clarinda Cemetery. Organizers note scarce flowers despite post service greenery and plan a community meeting next year to assign responsibility, as scouts and veterans wives have traditionally prepared bouquets for Memorial Day ceremonies.
Two classes, Clarinda Junior College and Clarinda High School, held joint commencement outdoors at the Fairgrounds amid a chilly May evening. Miss Janet Hayes topped JC sophomore honors with 3.97, and Virginia McDaniel led High School seniors with 3.86 for valedictory.
Mrs J KE Hale of Clarinda was elected to membership in the Iowa Historical Society during May, bringing the total 42 new members announced by Dr William J. Peterson, superintendent.
The Shorthorn Breeders Association of Southwest Iowa hosts a field day June 16 at the Lisle Farquhar farm near Coin and College Springs. Attendees bring a basket dinner. judging of bulls, heifers, and cows with calves will occur with prizes for adults and juniors. Dale Bellow will judge. Ken Falk handles demonstrations and judging setup.
Miss Wanda Smith a junior high math teacher is elected president to succeed John Altfillisch. New officers include Grant Whitney as vice president Lillian Barr as secretary Thelma Stamps as treasurer. County Education Council reps are Mrs Gerald Rowland Mrs Harry Bussard and Miss Ruth Barrett.

US Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Benson visited Norman Wynn’s farm northeast of Clarinda Nebraska Township on a Friday evening. He arrived two hours late, greeted Mrs Wynn and several waiting wives and children, and shook hands with each person as photographers prepared.
True to their purpose the GNU's assisted Wanda Wynn as she hosted Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Benson at her home on Friday afternoon. Club members helped prepare and serve coffee milk and cookies to Benson and about 500 neighbors newsmen and observers at the Wynn farm.
A large man in western attire surveyed a wheat field with Wynn extension personnel and farmers. He chased a young rabbit but then moved to a corn field where Benson kneeled as officials and newsmen observed.
Ralph Olson of Ellsworth the farmer who visited Russia last year will headline the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce quarterly dinner at St John s Lutheran Church Monday June 11 at 6 30 pm It is a guest night for farmers and members are urged to bring a farmer as a guest The program organized by the Dinners and Programs Committee led by Jim Montgomery will feature Olson who was part of Iowa s farm delegation traveling 10 000 miles in Russia last year He will discuss his experiences with color slides Tickets are not sold at the door and those needing tickets should contact the Chamber office by Thursday 4 pm.

Albert Rope manager of Page County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee will address Kiwanians at the Linderman Hotel Tuesday evening. He will discuss ASC functions and, if possible, explain details of the new soil bank program and its impact on area farms this year. Joe Faassen notes ASC activities are broad and of interest to Clarinda business leaders who interact with farmers.
The 1957 wheat allotment for Page County is 6,519 acres, down from 7,465 in 1956. Notices of individual farm allotments will be mailed by mid June, and voting on marketing quotas will occur July 20 in all 36 states. Iowa totals show a reduced state allotment and multiple counties receiving less or none. Monona and Harrison top statewide counts among the largest county allotments.
Ed Falk head of the Selective Service Board says three Page County residents have been notified they will be inducted in June. Edwin J Cairns Loren R Snow of Stuart and James L Armstrong of Kans will report at the Linderman Hotel at 7 30 am on Tuesday June 19 for transport to the Omaha induction center.
The town votes approving an elementary school bond issue with about 75 percent in favor. The final tally shows a decisive yes on the bond proposal totaling $58,000.
