Clarinda Blood Drive Targets 240 Pints Dec 13

East Page County Red Cross launches an all-out drive after a regional request doubles the Dec 13 Bloodmobile quota to 240 pints of O type blood. A 10 bed operation is planned at City Hall basement from noon to 6 pm with donors urged to book and bring friends.

Early Birds Line Up for Auto Plate Numbers at Courthouse

Shenandoah residents Tom Cutter and James Weir Jr claimed low numbers 73-0001 to 73-0004 at 4:39 am with 391 plate sets sold day one. Leonard Posten and W J Gross also secured notable numbers as sales continued on a first come basis.

Gendler Stone Low Bidder on Final 1955 County Road Work

Gendler Stone Products Co of Des Moines was the low bidder on the last project in the 1955 Page County road program. Bids for 2.2 miles of gravel or rock surfaced road were opened by the Iowa Highway Commission in Ames. Gendler bid 11 606.40 and must complete by December 17.

Man Hospitalized After S D Day Mishap Near Tarkio

Nathaniel Albee of Hamburg was hospitalized here after an S D Day auto crash six miles east of Tarkio Missouri Thursday night. He suffered a broken hip and head lacerations after his car spun on an icy highway and threw him from the vehicle. He could not identify who transported him to the Clarinda hospital.

Many Occupations Included On Tax Study Committee

The Iowa Taxation Study Committee brings diverse professionals to a Dec 16 10 am meeting at the Courthouse. Chairman Sen X T Prentis a hatchery operator from Mount Ayr serves 16 years in the Legislature and aims to curb overlapping state government activities to cut taxes. Vice chairman Rep Edward Oppedahl a farmer bank director and assessor notes the challenge is to equalize taxes across the economy and use public funds wisely. Secretary Sen Herman Knudson a retired businessman urges identifying demanded public services and delivering them at low cost. Viennese pianist Joerg Demus to perform in Shenandoah

Due to Earl Wilds illness the Southwest Iowa Civic Music Association features Joerg Demus, a promising 26 year old Viennese pianist making his United States debut. The concert is at Shenandoah High School auditorium at 8 pm with doors at 7 30 pm. Demus has drawn praise from a French critic as the most perfect pianist of the generation.

Sham baugh Church Burns To Ground

A fire starting in the furnace room of the Sham baug Church of God destroyed the building and its contents after 9 am. Pastor Rev G E McDaniel reported the blaze as Shambaugh firefighters and nearby departments fought dense smoke, giving up the loss shortly after 10 o'clock while preserving nearby properties. Insurance partially covered the loss.

Three semi trucks hogs crash near Clarinda injure none

A Friday morning collision on Highway 2 west of Clarinda involved a Yorktown school bus and three semis from Sioux City Motor Express Co. All 29 students aboard were unharmed. two hogs were injured, no fatalities.

Taylor Soil Savers Award Party Honors County Efforts

225 conservation minded residents gathered at Bedford High School for the Taylor Soil District award dinner. The World-Herald presented Roy Selley with the district’s second annual award, recognizing the county unit’s educational work, 4-H tours, and sponsorship of the 1954 state plowing contest. 93 Year Old Shambaugh Man Dies After Long Bedfast Period

Charles A Anderson aged 93 died Saturday at 9 am in West Portal Rest Home where he had been bedfast for more than two years following a four year old hip fracture. He lived most of his life near Shambaugh. Funeral Monday at Walker Funeral Home with Reverend and Mrs McGehy officiating. Burial in Clarinda Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Edna Damewood and son Clarence of Clarinda, plus two other daughters Mae Rousch and Minnie Henry of Pomona California.

East River Voters Approve 65 000 Bond for Grade School

East River Township residents vote seven to one in favor of issuing up to 65000 in bonds to build a new central grade school at Thompson School. Of 122 ballots cast 107 yes 15 no. the 10 room brick building is designed for 90 students and will replace the current nine one room schools five miles southeast of Clarinda.
