Heating plant to be gas fired at high school
The high school heating system will switch from coal to gas during Christmas vacation after an Omaha engineer urged immediate replacement. The plan uses two smaller boilers, one for mild weather, with natural gas burners and a standby bottle gas option, at an estimated $8,874. Max Shum Heating & Plumbing handles the work. A tunnel and arch are prepared to swap furnaces through a removable brick wall.

Des Moines Youth Sentenced and Paroled in Page County
Wayne J Grady of Des Moines, 20, was sentenced to six months in Page County Jail and paroled for six months after pleading guilty to breaking and entering in Braddyville. Arrested in Des Moines, he was returned July 12 by Sheriff Stanley Edgar after storming into a tavern on July 5 and stealing beer and articles. The value of stolen property was under $20.

Rebuild Plans After Shambaugh Church Fire
At a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday the Church of God members outlined plans to rebuild after a Monday fire. Services will occur at the Town Hall with Sunday school across the street at the Methodist Church. A Christmas program is set for December 21 and Clean-Up Day was designated for December 14. The estimated loss is 520,000 with 520,000 insured. the church had repainted exterior and basement, and Ladies Aid bought steel kitchen cabinets. Mrs R J Camp first reported smoke, triggering alarms. Rev G E McDaniel and the minister arrived soon after. Heat from the blaze blistered nearby home paint and forced moving household goods from Willie Babbs home as firefighters fought the fire.

The Rev H N Hulse, 83, died peacefully in his Clarinda home Tuesday morning ending a 58 year career as a minister with United Brethren and related churches. Funeral set Friday at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church with Des Moines ministers attending. Burial in Clarinda Cemetery. Survived by wife, six children, 16 grandchildren, one great grandchild.
