Clare Pioneers prepare for a home season opener against Big Rapids in Mid Michigan Class B play. Coach Perry relies on veterans from last year with reserves likely to factor in as rain alters practice and gate turnout expected despite tepid ticket sales.
Short course careers in agriculture are described in a new Michigan State College catalog. Enrollment cards accompany the catalog. Registration for elevator and farm supply, commercial floriculture, nursery and landscape management, and farm equipment service and sales is Friday September 24. General agriculture and home economics courses start Monday October 25. Catalogs available from the county agent or vocational agriculture instructors.

The second annual exhibit of Virginia Seitz students will be in the Wedgewood Room at Hotel Doherty on Sunday September 15 from noon to five. Artists include Doris Ann Bicknell Adelaide Elden Lucile Haley Dode Bonstelle Sarah Beck Helna Sellers Pat Pinaire Helen Anderson Coloma Warner Frank Nash William Warner and others.
Clare Bericht Chief Bert Head announces city cooperation with State Safety Commission for the annual Watch Out For Kids program to curb school area speeding and educate parents and drivers. State Superintendent Claire L. Taylor warns of record school returns and urges motorists to slow down. The effort involves leaflets posters and school outreach with public and private coordination to save lives.
Clare Public School PTA invites members to a September meeting at the High School 8 p.m. featuring Esther L Middlewood director of Mental Health Education for Michigan speaking on The Teen-age Years. Irene Vargas will accompany her. all are urged to attend. Clare PTA president Mrs John Wicklund.
The Michigan Association of School Boards plans a one day Oct 20 session at Michigan State College focusing on Improving Schools and School Board Members. About 400 attendees expected with sessions on legislation insurance special education and curriculum. The group has 7000 members across 82 counties and a special county boards meeting will hear Dr Harlan Been of the Midwest Center.
The Scott Drilling softball team finished with 21 victories and four defeats, a championship pace noted by school officials. Community support for all sports remains urged as football ticket sales lag despite a new league bringing action this year.
State park managers report continual vandalism with bath houses, toilets, signs, and tables damaged weekly. Some locations see nineteen acts in a single week, forcing workers to divert time from maintenance to repairs and hindering public recreational facilities.
The Clare Women Golfers at Twin Elms shifted from planned golf to bridge Canasta and Pepper on September 14 after rain. Clare and Isabella county sheepmen can obtain high quality registered rams by attending Ram Day at Michigan State College on October 4 or visiting one of six Ram Truck stops outside Michigan. Participants should specify breed age and price to hold a ram. The Ram Truck route includes St Louis Clare West Branch Glenie Alpena Gaylord with top quality yearling and two year olds from leading Michigan flocks.
Detroit area food inspector Joseph Eckhout visited a Highland Park bridge club to answer questions on canned corned beef and food standards. He explained prep and meat grades, fielding inquiries about poultry and cut up chicken as the club learned about the department's statutes and enforcement roles.
The Clare Rod and Gun Club sets the first skeet shoot of the season for Sunday September 26 at 9 30 A M through 4 30 P M with prizes and public invitations. The club is located across from the airports.
The Clare County Fair faced heavy rain reducing activities. Joie Chitwood's Auto Thrill Show and School Day were canceled. Thursday’s Harrison Day racing was also called off due to mud. Officials hope for a successful Children's Day later, with Kurt's Duo high pole act planned for Harrison.
The Saginaw Fair features a giant cake replica created by Mrs Frances H De Sonia of Davison Michigan. The cake shows a revolving Merry Go Round and details including a licorice fence and candy cane animals with labeled barns for Horses Sheep and Cattle.
Clare High School officials announce tickets for tonights game with Big Rapids go on sale at the field box office from 7 15 p m. A 15 cent parking charge applies with an attendant on duty. Superintendent Thomas C Campbell asks drivers to follow parking instructions to ease post game traffic. The 8 p m game also offers single game admissions 80 cents for adults and 30 cents for students.
City Manager Willard Wedge told the Clare City Commission that the 1949 well must be shut due to rust and high iron content. A new well with 350 gpm capacity is planned if state health approval is denied for the old well, or a filtering system could be installed at 30,000 dollars. The council also advances sewerage work District 2 and Rainbow Drive while awaiting health-permit decisions. The town benefits from natural fluorine in Clare water at 0.3 ppm reducing tooth decay.
Fred J. Fenske district governor of Rotary International District 220 spoke to the Clare Rotary Club at Hotel Doherty. He noted Rotary’s 8300 clubs pursue goodwill and that Rotary International has spent over 1.5 million dollars on student fellowships, with 606 fellowships awarded since 1947 to students in 57 countries. Miss Mary Nevins, daughter of Leslie J. Nevins, received the last district fellowship and studied at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.
The Michigan conservation department notes that fines from violations stay in the arrest county and fund libraries. The largest contributors were 959 fishermen fishing without licenses, plus 106 violators for undersized fish. Forty-two nonresidents claimed they lived elsewhere to aid library funds. The arrests list includes careless boating, killing protected song birds, lending licenses, littering state land, illegal hunting, and possessing a skunk.
