The European Corn Borer was found in Arthur and Winterfield townships in Clare County by Federal Scouts. A quarantine will prevent green corn shipments from the area next year, with plowing and burning of stalks urged to curb spread. The borer, larva of a moth, overwinters in stalks and emerges in June to lay eggs. proper farm sanitation can keep corn production viable.

Mrs Dilla Varney died September 3 after a five week illness following a stroke of paralysis. Funeral services were at her son’s home in Vernon with Rev Bates officiating and burial in Cherry Grove cemetery. Born August 30 1856 in Van Buren county she married Nathan Varney in 1883 and moved here in 1900. They had six sons Merton Morrisonville Wis Samuel Kingston Pa Jay Leaton Arthur Flint and Herbert Vernon township. Mr Varney died about sixteen years ago leaving her to raise the family.
