Pioneer Margaret Koeppe dies in Clare Hospital

Margaret Beatrice Hemstreet Koeppe of Toledo Ohio died August 27 1951 in Clare General Hospital after a brief illness she was 73 years 11 months 4 days born September 24 1877 in Wallaceburg Ontario daughter of Nelson and Rachel Hemstreet she moved to Clare county as a child married Carl A Koeppe in 1905 who died 1930 she was a member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church Toledo survived by five brothers George William James Scott of Clare and Robert Hemstreet Norwalk a niece Gladys Whitlock among others services were held at Hemstreet Home and Doherty Funeral Parlor August 30. burial at Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Highway Head To Talk Roads Here Wednesday

Tickets are on sale for a joint dinner meeting of the Clare Kiwanis Club Clare Rotary Club and Clare Chambers of Commerce at Hotel Doherty next Wednesday at 6 20 PM. Lightning Destroys Third Barn On Beaverton Farm

A 66 by 80 foot barn on Arthur Dull’s Poultry and Egg Farm near the county line in Beaverton township burned Thursday evening. Lightning struck after Dull had parked his truck, igniting the main structure and a hay supply. Clare Fire Department couldn’t save the barn, with 300 tons of hay a wooden silo and dairy equipment lost. Loss estimated at 20 000 to 25 000 with partial coverage by insurance.

Holiday toll over Labor Day weekend records set

The Labor Day weekend toll reached 664 fatalities with 421 traffic deaths, a new holiday record. Michigan saw 19 deaths, 13 in traffic accidents, while Clare and Isabella counties reported only minor crashes. Several local collisions in Clare involved Teixeira, Taylor, Bergey, Liechti, Utley, Chapple, Sanford, McTaggert, Taylor, and Anthony, with damages ranging from $25 to $200 and fines issued for violations.

Hartshorn to pitch horseshoes at Oklahoma meet

Richard Hartshorn of Clare is named Michigan district Cities Service Oil barnyard colt champion after winning the tournament at the tool house near Glare. He defeats Humphrey Smith and Harold Wright, then loses to Jack Morrison who is unqualified. Hartshorn and Wright were top contenders. Hartshorn heads to Bartlesville September 15–16 for Cities Service tournament open to 30 districts.

Rotary Club Sends Books to Filipinos

Rotary club members completed a project last week to send a case of books to a public library in the Philippine Islands. They collected about fifty books and magazines, sent to the Smithsonian Institute for forwarding to the destination. The club luncheon featured a program by Consulergs Power Company representatives showing Michigan industry in upstate towns.

Unemployment Checks Issued in Clare Sept 12

The Michigan Unemployment Security Commission will issue about 300 unemployment checks totaling roughly 8400 at Clare city hall auditorium from 4:00 to 6:30 p m next Wednesday September 12. The Alma district office will bring two automatic check writing machines and staff Clare Isabella and Gratiot counties with weekly outreach in Mt Pleasant and Alma office hours daily.

Hatton Township Resident Dies After Stroke

Hilda Irene Pugsley born December 1 1906 in Glenn Michigan died August 21 after a stroke at age 44 years eight months and twenty days. She lived in Hatton Township after a 1936 move with husband Cornelius Krocker and son Ronald. Funeral services were held August 24 at Harrison United Brethren Church with Reverend Gerald Brady officiating. Interment followed in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Witbeck Infant Recovers at University Hospital

Cindy Moira Witbeck nine day old daughter of Mr and Mrs Roland Witbeck of Coleman was reported improved at University Hospital Ann Arbor after an esophageal obstruction was removed in an operation. The baby born August 29 at Central Michigan Community Hospital Mt. Pleasant had pneumonia complicating the case and began feeding liquids Thursday. Recovery expected over one to two weeks before homecoming.

Clare City approves new pumper fire truck for rural city district

Clare City Commission authorizes Mayor Haley and Fire Chief Bruckart to contract with Brown & Bruckart Sales and Howe Fire Apparatus for a $11 000 new fire pumper. The unit includes two Dodge chassis 17 1 2 inch wheelbase, 500 gpm pump, ladders, thousands of feet of hose, four flood lights, and heated enclosed cab, delivery in about six months. It serves Clare and surrounding townships Grant Sheridan Vernon Wise and is approved by the National Board of Fire Underwriters.

Paulette Harr laid to rest in Cherry Grove Cemetery

Funeral services were held for Paulette Elizabeth Harr seven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Harr. Rev. Disorderly Conduct Lands Three In Municipal Court

Three individuals faced municipal court after Labor Day events. Clifford Roberts, 19, Glare, pled guilty to disorderly conduct and chose a $10 fine over 10 days in jail. John Wagner, Harwell R-1, pleaded guilty and paid $6 with 60 days probation and a tavern ban. Clarence Hall, Farwell, was fined $20 for fighting in a public place.
