Circuit Court to Convene at Harrison Tuesday

Circuit Court will convene in the Harrison courthouse next Tuesday September 7 with Judge Ray Wart presiding. The calendar lists naturalization petitions and cases including The People vs Bob Stager breaking and entering The People vs Paul Oakley removing mortgaged property The People vs Lynes Oakley removing mortgaged property The People vs Rowland Mussell disorderly person third offense and others such as reckless driving malicious destruction of property and various civil matters. Petit jurors are named for Harrison Clare Surrey Winterfield and neighboring areas.

Survivors honored at Farwell troop gathering

A crowd of nearly two hundred gathered at Farwell Jr. O.F. hall to honor visiting servicemen. Attendees included Arlie M. Schofield of the Navy and Machinist Mate Second Class, Pvt. William Moore from Alabama, and Privates Raymond Marshall and Roscoe Pitts from Florida. Each spoke of service life, with Moore recalling camp sports and Pitts managing aircraft signals.

J Stoll Burned Severely On Way To Work

John Stoll of Clare suffered second and third degree burns when a short circuit in his car wires ignited his shirt and trousers while he stopped on the Rose Lake oil field road five miles northeast of Reed City on Sunday morning. He was taken to Reed City hospital and remains in pain but stable.

Clare Candidate Enters Nursing Training Tuesday

Marion Bell, Clare’s local candidate, began nursing training at Saginaw General Hospital on Tuesday August 31. Born in Barryton in 1925, she moved to Clare, graduated from Clare High in 1943, and earned a $250 scholarship after entrance exams. The program supports war effort by freeing graduate nurses for service.

Mrs Al Powers Passes Away At Clare Hospital

Mrs Alvy Powers longtime Clare resident died Monday at Clare Hospital aged 55. Born September 16 1887 in Sanford Michigan she married Alvy Powers September 23 1908 and lived in Clare thirty five years. Survived by husband son Clifford of Clare daughter Josephine Clarey of Rosebush three sisters seven grandchildren and other relatives. Prayer service at son’s home at 2 00 pm funeral at Clare Methodist church at 2 80 pm with Rev Charles B Hahn officiating interment Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Mother Fatally Shot by Husband in Mt Pleasant

Glenn White, 34, a Standish oil field worker, is held on murder charges after shooting his wife Betty White, 29, near her sister Mrs. Bert Goodall's Mt Pleasant home. The couple had separated, a divorce suit was reported, and White fled after firing one shot. He was captured near Sterling, unable to speak due to intoxication.

Trout Planting Planned in Clare County Ponds

On Sunday September 12 approximately 150 000 brook and rainbow trout will be planted from Clare County Federal trout rearing ponds near Spike Horn bear camp. The planting will involve Clare Red and Gun Club Harrison Sportsman's Club and the Department of Conservation. Four Burned in Tank Farm Fire Near Temple

A 3,000 barrel tank exploded and a 2,000 barrel tank burned at the Simerall Pipe Line tank farm four miles south of Temple on the Van Horn lease. Four men were burned. one critically. Fire crews from Clare and local rural units cooled tanks and extinguished flames with foamite. All injured were expected to recover.

Ram Truck Coming to Clare Area This Wednesday

The Michigan purebred sheep breeders ram truck will stop near Clare on October 13. B L Benton, animal husbandry specialist of M C, announces the stop, with exchange and sale of local rams to improve nearby flocks. Jerome Caner Dies at Greenwood Home Aged 57

Jerome Caner lifelong Greenwood township resident died at his home Sunday August 29 after years of illness following surgery. Born December 13 1885 to Maron and Adell Caner he married Eveline Gaison November 24 1910 and had two daughters Theodora and Ruth. He left a wife two daughters two sisters and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Murphy Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Clare county is allotted 372000 for the Third War Loan with a Michigan total of 451000000 and a national quota of 15000000000. The drive begins September 9 with a rally at Clare city hall and calls for every citizen to invest in government bonds through individual and corporate purchases.

Quarterly Conference Held at Clare and Farwell Churches

Sunday evening marked the first quarterly conference for the Clare and Farwell Methodist Churches. Rev. Byron Hahn from Big Rapids attended and led a devotional on Faith. The District Superintendent noted strong cooperation and outlined goals for evangelism endowment and Sunday School visitation.
