Pythian Shrine to be Brought to Clare

The Rathbone Schoolhouse at Eagle Harbor, linked to Justus H. Rathbone and the Knights of Pythias, will be replicated and toured to Michigan lodges. Clare Lodge No. 97 will receive it from Midland Lodge at Castle Hall on November 10, then carry it to Marion Lodge on November 11. members urged to attend.

A C Baltzer to Speak on The Dairy Question

A series of talks on dairying will bring dairy specialist A C Baltzer from Michigan State College to the local high school. Baltzer, head of the cow testing association work in Michigan, will share information to help farmers. The open night school meeting starts Tuesday at 7:30 PM and invites all interested, especially dairy cattle owners.

Night School to Draw Large Crowd in Clare

Clare public schools host an evening session next Thursday from seven to eight thirty. Parents and patrons may observe morning high school and kindergarten classes in action with lessons as planned. An art exhibit opens at eight in the Mathematics room with fifteen cent admission benefiting school picture purchases. Mothers of country girls in Clare invited to meet Mrs Ste Na Lampman at the session room at eight thirty.

Mrs Mary E Phipps Dies After Illness

Mrs Mary Elizabeth Phipps died at her home after a short illness from apoplexy. Funeral likely at her home Sunday afternoon. Obituary to follow next week.

Box Social Tonight at Brick School House

A box social and program of Halloween sports will be held tonight at the Brick school house three miles south of Clare. A fish pond booth is also planned to benefit the school. Alicea Hochstetler is the teacher coordinating the event.

Retail Hardware Dealers Hold District Meeting in Clare

A meeting of the Retail Hardware Dealers Association district covering Gratiot Isabella Midland Gladwin Roscommon Osceola and Clare counties was held at the Hotel Doherty Monday evening. Banquet attendance was strong with B N Mercer of Clare as toastmaster. Key speeches by Waldo Bruske of Saginaw and Charles F Nelson of Marine City focused on better merchandising attractive stores and top level public service. The event is part of a state wide series of group meetings under the association.

Musical Treat Sunday Evening at Clare Methodist

A musical feature is planned for next Sunday evening at Clare Methodist church. Violin numbers by Mr. Roth of Fint, noted for broadcasts, will showcase fine tone and technique. Additional special features are being arranged, and a good attendance reflects strong interest.

Beaverton Woman Eliza Runyan Dead at 84

Beaverton resident Mrs Eliza beth Runyan died Monday at her daughter Mrs Alice Clemons home. She was over four score and ten years old. Last rites were at Hagle church Thursday by Rev Chas Kleinhardt and burial followed in Thompson cemetery. A life sketch will appear next week.

The first Hallowe'en party of the season was given Monday evening by Mrs. M. R. Howlett entertaining eighteen ladies with stunts, bridge, and prizes. Mrs. G. H. Phelps won first, Mrs. J. Asline second, and Mrs. John Howlett third in the bridge contest.

Dairy Farm Meeting At Mt Vernon Grange

Tool Shed Burns at Currie Farm Southwest of Clare

A gasoline ignition near a lighted lantern caused a fire at the W H Currie farm three miles southwest of Clare Saturday night. The two story frame tool shed and its contents including tractors haying and threshing machinery were destroyed. Estimated loss ten thousand dollars fully insured with Clare fire department responding. Rural truck lacked adequate hose to control the blaze.

Mrs Betta Rugsell formerly Mrs Ed Stevens of Clare builds a Long Beach pickle business from orphaned youth to widowhood to factory founder. She overcomes losses, works from dawn to midnight, earns recognition from rival pickle makers, and enters a partnership with an established company. Aged Lady Severely Injured In Fall

Last Saturday afternoon Mrs. Wm. Lackie of south McEwan street slipped on a wet floor and broke her left hip and shoulder. The accident occurred while granddaughter-in-law Orvil Smith was cleaning the kitchen floor. The patient is resting nicely and confined to bed for several weeks.

Fine Art Prints Exhibit at Clare School Next Thursday

The Clare school hosts a Fine Art Prints exhibit on Thursday evening November 3. Superintendent Bogan arranged the loan of 150 masterpieces from various schools of art to raise funds for school pictures. A 15 cent admission to the Mathematics room supports the picture fund.

Black bears seen by railroad men near Clare

An Ann Arbor south bound freight train near Summit, twelve miles northwest of Clare, encountered two large black bears at about eight pm. Engineer Mills of Owosso said the bears walked the track as the train sounded its whistle and shut off steam. Hair found on the pilot confirmed contact with one bear. Both animals appeared reluctant to move.

Red Cross membership drive opens November 11

Committees plan the county's largest Red Cross enrollment under Ruth Hachmuth as chair. The nationwide roll call runs November 11 through 24, urging teachers and public workers to enroll many during the twelve day drive to support disaster relief and county needs.

Halloween Party At Congregational Church

A Halloween party for the church youth hosted by the Sunday School young peoples class drew about fifty attendees last Tuesday evening. Mrs J H Wilson’s class held a separate party on Wednesday with twenty present. The primary department arranged a Thursday event for thirty five kindergarteners with games refreshments and festive decor.

Auto Mishaps During Week

On the middle branch road near Clair Coulter’s farm in Arthur township a car driven by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sanders went into a ditch. Mrs. Sanders suffered two broken arms and minor injuries while her husband was badly bruised and pinned under the car until aid arrived. Their son was unhurt. Mrs. Sanders ran about a hundred rods to summon help. Dr. Reeder reported all progressing well. Nearby, Mr. and Mrs. B A Anderson, returning from the Michigan Ohio game in Ann Arbor, swerved off the road near St Johns when the steering wheel broke. No serious injuries occurred, just a severe shaking and minor damage.

Epworth League plans election meeting at 6 on October 80

The Epworthians report good turnout for last Sunday and invite members to attend next Sunday's 6 PM meeting to elect officers and discuss League help. Miss Grace Johnson returned home Tuesday from Mt. Pleasant hospital and is recovering after an operation.
