Clare businessmen forecast a busy Friday as Harvest Fiesta promotions ignite shopping and entertainment. Ken Barnes says the event aims to boost long term local goodwill and retail satisfaction with new displays, souvenirs, Latin band appearances, and deep discount sales.
A new Junior High student group from Andersonville with teacher Mrs. Ellen Zinser has been relocated to Clare Public School. Twenty students attend Junior High in the former driver training room at the upstairs west end. Driver training moved to the Pioneer room on the second floor to relieve overcrowding in four other downstairs rooms.
The Men's Monday Night Bowling League omits Clarence Cotton from the high three despite a 214 game score. The article notes the misprint in this week’s sports page and corrects the records for the league’s top performers.
Albert Bunting, 75, was taken to Clare Hospital after being hit by a car at Fifth and McEwan Streets. Laurence Allen Bay, 25, of Clare, driving the car, was not held after stating he failed to see the pedestrian.
The Methodist Primary Department children held their annual planting party after school on Thursday. They planted three flowering almond shrubs two at the east church entrance and one at the parsonage. Games and group singing filled the afternoon, directed by assistant teacher Mrs Ronald Wilson. Teachers included superintendent Mrs Eugenerey and Mrs William Case, Mrs Fred Bell, and Mrs R B Kring. Refreshments were served by class mothers Mrs Basil Cole Mrs Chester Bell and Mrs Hollis Walton.
Mrs. Harold Schaeffer and her relatives met Vice President Nixon at Tri-City Airport as he began his Whistle Stop tour through Michigan Illinois and into California. Nixon greeted a convalescent spectator in a wheelchair and waved to a thirteen car motorcade before boarding a train at Saginaw and continuing to Pontiac Lapeer Imlay City and Flint.
Watervliet begins construction of a barking mill at its concentration yard west of Clare. The 26 by 64 foot steel building will house the Wig machine and amenities for workers. operations manager John Hanson aims for December 16 startup. A second building, a 920 square foot office, will follow to replace the existing shed office.
Scout Troop 7 of the Clare Girl Scouts offers free babysitting on Election Day as part of a Get-Out-The-Vote effort. Participating girls include Carolyn Bau der, Sharon Beemer, Sharon Braz zie, Sandy Wentworth, Barbara Guiette, Judy Marotzke, Sharon Jackson, Veronica Haynak, Carolyn Secibt and Jan DeFoy.
Clare Rotary Club plans the Rotary Chronicle for this year with a focus on Clare manufacturing and processing. More than 50 Rotarians will sell the issue from Friday noon to Saturday 6 pm with Frank LaGoe as editor and Jen nings Archambault as advertising manager. Proceeds support Rotary projects aiding underprivileged children.

Judy Brown profiles Jimmy Allen from Mrs Mildred Rauch's room chosen to represent patrol boys. He guides students safely at State and Pine streets, a busy school corner, and enjoys baseball basketball and summer swimming. He lives at 411 East Fifth Street with his parents Mr and Mrs Rex Allen.
Sharon Zimmerman reports a photographer will visit Clare Public School on Monday October 29 to take student pictures from kindergarten through twelfth grade for permanent records. Pictures may be purchased by students if they choose.
The Clare High School band will perform in a Homecoming parade through Clare’s business district on Friday afternoon and join in a halftime crown formation for the Queen ceremony during the clash between Clare Pioneers and Ithaca Yellow Jackets. The group recently returned from Ann Arbor after participating in a massed high school band event at the University of Michigan stadium.
The Shepherd Bluejays edged Clare 27 26 after a late rally. Key scores included Don Leonard’s 7 yard run and Dan Bookey 37 yard TD for Shepherd, while Clare’s Dave Moffitt and Guy Hanekow connected on several passes to keep the game close.
Girl Scouts from Clare county council and Boy Scouts from Valley Trails council will be guests at Central Michigan College's football game with Milwaukee State this weekend October 27. About 500 School Safety Patrol members from across the North Central section will also attend as guests. This annual invitation is a Ceritral event.
Judy Brown reports Halloween parties will be held in the afternoon of October 31 at Clare Public School. Children will bring 10 cents for refreshments. most will wear costumes and parade through the elementary rooms.
The First Congregational Church school in Clare hosts UNICEF Halloween trick or treat to aid hungry children worldwide. Kids in costume collect coins tonight with orange UNICEF canisters, meeting at 6:30 p.m. and returning at 8:30 p.m. Funds supplement diets and medical aid. Parade floats and Homecoming events follow, with multiple local bands and student groups contributing.
Judy Brown reports Clare Public School will hold a district wide parent teacher conference for grades K 5 on November 1 with four group sessions at 9 00 10 30 1 00 and 2 30. Principal Allan Tulk will send home notices and offer individual conferences on request.
The Clare County 4-H Club Fall Achievement Day will be held Saturday evening October 27 at 8 pm in Harrison High School gymnasium. A short program will present certificates and awards for the summer 4-H program. Miss Dorig Kowalk, an International Farm Bureau Exchange delegate to India in 1955 and now an M A student, will speak on An IFYE in India. Square-dancing will close the program led by Phyllis Pearson. Refreshments will be served. Public is invited.
Mr and Mrs Frank Wick of Northport were cited for safe highway use in Clare Salute to Safety. The Wicks two children and a small puppy were in the car when authorities arrested them between Mt Pleasant and Clare. They were escorted to Clare by Police Chief Bill Cook and state troopers where they were interviewed and received presents. A radio interview was broadcast from Northport to Mt Pleasant after tape recording was lost.
Thomas Quinby a Michigan Democratic national committeeman will speak at the Surrey Grant township meeting in Grant town hall on Wednesday October 1 at 8 30. Quinby former Harvard assistant dean and Grand Rapids businessman now directs the State Workmen's Compensation Department. Robert Sawyer Democratic candidate for state representative will address local and state problems. Public invited. meeting sponsored by the Young Democrat Club of Clare County.
The Thespian group at Clare High School lists 13 cast members for the comedy Strictly Formal to be performed in November in the school auditorium. Key roles include Jane portrayed by Ann Jackson, Jane's friend Jean Bowler, and Jane's suitor George played by Al Terwilliger, with a large ensemble surrounding them.
The report mentions Homecoming activities in Clare with voter displays for queen candidates, a downtown parade led by CHS staff, traffic control help from CHS faculty, and a football game against Ithaca Yellowjackets at 8 pm followed by a coronation and a public school gym dance.

October 12 brought the Rhodes family together after 29 years. Walter and Roy Rhodes of Flint with Leota Green of Midland joined Gertie Gardiner in welcoming Hunie Rhodes and others to Harrison. They shared a dinner at the Surrey House and posed for group photos with Lee Sowles before returning to Gardiner's for the week.
