County ME A Meeting Held at Farwell October 7

The Clare County Michigan Educational Association held a meeting at Farwell high school on Wednesday evening October 7 with seventy members and guests. President Reynald Mick opened the session and the program featured community singing and introductions of new teachers. Chas Amble urged full MEA membership and stressed the Tri County Health Unit's value to schools. Geraldine LeRoux performed piano selections, and committees for the coming year were named with Monel Clare replaced as delegate to the legislative assembly by Paul Lowrey.

Child Health Conference Here Next Wednesday

The twelfth in the series of Child Health Conferences will be held at the County Health office in Clare city hall from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 1:04 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday October Bist. Mothers are invited to bring babies and preschool children to be weighed measured examined and immunized if desired.

Local Sportsmen Display Wildlife Week Window

Citizens collaborated with Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Clare Rod and Gun Club to create an attractive display at Clare Hardware & Furniture during Michigan Conservation Week. Contributions came from Al Wellman Clare Henry Consumers Power Jesse Hampton and others. The life like scene featured bear deer and other forest denizens to promote conservation and tourism.

Joan A Sutler of Lansing Dies in Clare Cafe

John Allen Butler aged 65 years 8 months of 412 Cavanaugh Road Lansing died of acute heart attack at 3 30 Sunday morning in the Nivison Cafe Clare. Friz ambulance took him to Clare Hospital where doctors said he died instantly. Remains were taken to Estes Leadley Funeral Home Lansing with services held Wednesday and interment in Lansing.

Mrs George Siel Dies in Farwell at 71

Mrs George Siel of Farwell died Wednesday at 5 00 am after eleven weeks of illness. She was 71 years old and survived by her husband George Siel. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 00 pm at the Farwell Methodist church, with Dr John H Hall officiating, and burial in Surrey Township Cemetery. The couple marked their fifty fifth wedding anniversary October 2. A life story is planned for next week.

Scrap brass drive at Clare Hi-Speed station

Hunters are urged to bring used shotgun and rifle shells to the Clare Hi-Speed station to fill the front window with scrap brass for the war effort. The notice calls for community participation and warns that donations support national needs.

Barnes Speaks in Clare on Airplane Observation Posts

Major G. M. Barnes of the U S Army Signal Corps addressed about fifty Clare residents at city hall on plans to establish airplane observation posts in Clare county. The first post will be at the Hotel Doherty roof in Clare, with Harrison and Farwell to follow as needed. Civilian Defense volunteers are urged to assist, contacting County CD Commander Conrad Walker.

War Bond Sales Ebbs in County First Ten Days

County War Bond figures for the first ten days of October show total sales of 7442.25 led by Farwell with 2100 and Clare with 2925.00. Harrison post office and bank contributions appear, Temple and Citizens State Bank totals listed, county short about 2000 but expected to rise in the remaining twenty days. A state compliment praises September performance and calls for continued support to meet the quota.

Farm Trucks Registered at USDA Office

National Farm Truck Registration Days set for October 22 28 and 24 require each farm truck to be registered with the County USDA War Board Office in Harrison. Mrs. Lillie Grigg Dies After Illness at 76 in Sheridan

Mrs. Lillie Grigg a Sheridan township resident since 1891 died Wednesday October 14 after several weeks of illness. Funeral services by Rev. Charles Kleinhardt Friday at 2:00 PM at Thurston Funeral Home with burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery. An obituary will run next week.

Former Clare Woman Fatally Burned In Accident

Velma Irene Reger Baird of Clare County died from burns received at her farm near Hastings after gasoline in a kerosene can was spilled into a kitchen stove. She passed away at Hastings Hospital at 4:00 AM after the Thursday morning incident. She was 32, married to Alvin A. Baird, with two children.

Farwell Man Thumbs Destroyed In Truck Incident

John Bauer of Farwell Michigan suffered the loss of his left thumb while operating a County Road Commission gravel truck northeast of Clare. While lifting the truck box the hydraulic hoist rope slipped through his hand and tore the thumb off. He was taken to Clare Hospital where the entire thumb was removed the following morning.

Mrs Levi Scott Injured in Port Huron Auto Crash

While visiting their daughter in Port Huron last Friday, Mr and Mrs Levi Scott were in an auto accident. A tire blew out sending their car into a ditch and overturning. Mrs Scott suffered a broken arm in three places and was taken to Port Huron hospital for an extended stay.

Clare Rod and Gun Club Hosts Higgins Lake Training School Visit

Eighty four members and guests from the Clare Rod and Gun Club traveled from Clare to Higgins Lake for a Department of Conservation Training School visit. Russell Martin hosted a chicken dinner and tours of dormitories, classrooms, and kitchens. He showed films on Migratory Ducks and Michigan Canoe Trails and spoke about milkweed applications for the Navy and new uses for its floss in life preservers and mattresses. Deer were seen on the return drive as the group noted the enjoyable evening and the facility’s architectural beauty.
