Two hundred farmers and hosts from the Clare Chamber of Commerce met Tuesday in the Wood Room of Hotel Doherty for Farmers Night. Mayor Theo Wallington welcomed guests and praised the small city’s business and farming spirit as Walter Kleiner delivered the response and Ed Johnston acted as toastmaster.

William F. Timm Laid at Rest in Cherry Grove
William F. Timm, age 77, died October 6 1948 at his daughter's home in Clare County after months of illness. He was born January 18 1871 in Germany, immigrated at age 16, and lived on a Caledonia farm before moving to Clare. He married Mary Hein in 1903 and had two daughters, Florence Myers of Owosso and Elizabeth Myers of Lansing. Funeral services were held October 8 1948 at Thurston Funeral Home with Rev Leah Gardon officiating and burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Mt Varnum D., 30, journalism teacher and dramatics coach at Mt Pleasant High School, killed midnight Monday when his car struck a tree near Shepherd Road and M-20. State police say he likely died instantly. his wife said he had sleep problems and nerves, and left home about 11:10 p.m. He leaves two children.

Congress Farm Price Support Act Aims to Stabilize Farmers
Michigan State College economists say the recently passed act updates parity to reflect market changes and production advances. The plan lowers parity for some crops and raises it for hogs beef milk and cottonseed, keeps many supports at 90 percent of parity through 1949, and introduces a flexible 60 to 90 percent parity starting 1950. The goal is larger total incomes from higher production and to avert price collapses while maintaining abundant food supplies.
