Vernon Leaton Council Attends Diocesan Meet

A Vernon-Seaton Council delegation from the Big Rapids district attended Grand Rapids Diocesan Council events on October 5. The program included mass at St Andrew's Cathedral, luncheon at the Pantlind Hotel, committee reports, and talks by Judge Daniel J Healey and Dr Jerome Kerivin. Father Falicki closed with a call to spread Catholic doctrine. The Mt Pleasant Beal City parishes and others across the diocese were represented and urged to carry out the work set for them.

Clare Post 2 Nearing Top Membership for 1940

Clare American Legion Post No 2 in Michigan was praised by State Legion Headquarters for its 1940 membership surge. The Clare squadron led sixty Michigan squadrons by going over the top, with all officers paid up and plans for a record year ahead. The post has repeatedly won the Most Distinguished Citation for early over the top status.

Methodist Sunday School Board Meets Tuesday at Sternaman Studio

The Methodist Sunday School Board gathered Tuesday evening at Sternaman Studio with fourteen officers and teachers present. Mrs. Wm. Garchow led prayer, Mrs. Sternaman presided, reports from the secretary and treasurer were accepted, and several issues were acted upon with others to be decided later.

Lake George Lad Electrocuted At Play Near Home

Julius T Borst ten year old son of Mr and Mrs Julius R Borst of Lake George was electrocuted at 2 PM Sunday while at play. He touched a wire from an electric line while climbing a tree near an abandoned nest and fell unconscious. Chief Dunlop led the exhumation and Dr Sanford pronounced him dead. Funeral held at Lake George Community Building with Rev Dawe officiating.

Veterans groups to observe Navy Day in Michigan

Alvan Macauley of Detroit is general chairman for Navy Day events on October 27 and has been named commander of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts statewide. With war readiness emphasized, officials expect broad participation from AJIT groups as Presidents Roosevelt and Governor Dickinson urge observance. Mayors statewide support the proclamation and call for active involvement.

Sixty Special Deputies Aid Clare County Officers

Sheriff Seaver leads a joint effort with the Clare Rat and Gun Club and Harrison Hunting and Fishing Club to deputize sixty special deputies. Timothy Regan a longtime Vernon Township resident died suddenly in his chair at his home near Clare about 5 30 Tuesday evening Cause acute dilatation of the heart He was born May 10 1857 in Park Hill Ontario Canada and died October 10 1939 at age 82 He is survived by wife Mary one son and three daughters Funeral services will be held at St Henry s church Vernon Friday at 900 a m with Rev Fr Tomaszewski singing Requiem High Mass burial in St Henry s cemetery An obituary will be published next week

Alma Young Man Injured in Auto Wreck Sunday

Marvin Taylor 18 of Alma is hospitalized with a fractured pelvis and abdominal lacerations after a Sunday evening crash on US-27 near the north Clare city limits. Passenger Jack Freeman 17 and his brother Donald escaped injury. Freeman claimed he tried to pass then cut back causing the overturn into a ditch.

Indian Lad Escapes Officers With Rest Room Break

Lester Langdon thirteen year old part Indian from St Ignace had been at Soys Vocational School Lansing for larceny. He fled while in Clare under custody of Mrs L M Conlogue and Wm Dolan entering a rest room at Jones Standard Service Station. He escaped by locking the door and slipping out a window. Police pursued three miles west then lost trail in a wooded area. State Police to aid capture.

Clarence Scott Injured in Saginaw Railroad Yard Accident

Clarence Scott, son of Mr and Mrs Levi Scott of Cluse, yard master in Michigan Central yards at Saginaw, stepped near a moving freight car and was struck in the back by its step. Dragged along after grabbing a hand rail, he remained in very serious condition after six weeks at St Mary's Hospital.

Isabella Indian accused of assault near Rosebush

Abraham Solomon a 31 year old Indian WPA worker from near Rosebush is jailed in Mt. Pleasant charged with criminally assaulting a 35 year old unmarried woman early Monday. He broke in by a window, chased the women to the yard, seized one and bit her cheek. state police and sheriff jailed him within an hour. He faces attempted rape charges and possible circuit court action next. Names of the women are withheld.
