Surprise Celebration Marks Georgia Martin Day at WCEN

Mrs. Georgia Martin of Rosebush a longtime WCEN radio broadcaster was surprised with a Georgia Martin Day on October 3 at a Mt Pleasant luncheon. The celebration honored her ten years on air with gifts including a portable TV an engraved bowl and a recording by WCEN staff. The Safety Story program is noted as a popular part of her work.

PTA Meets Monday Open House at Clare Elementary

The PTA schedules an eight o clock Monday meeting in the Clare Elementary School building. Refreshments are arranged and parents are invited to bring children who will be cared for by babysitters during the program.

William Wood First Trainee To Complete Holley Apprenticeship

William Wood of Holley Carburetor Company completed a four year toolmaker apprenticeship at the Clare Aircraft Division. The ceremony featured a framed U S Labor Department certificate and full reimbursement of his $524 training expenses. Plant Manager Harold Saindborn praised the milestone reached by Wood and the apprenticeship program.

Virginia Seitz Named Arts and Crafts Director at Central Michigan

Art director Mrs. Virginia Seitz is named Arts and Crafts Director for the University Center at Central Michigan University. She is a prize winning Michigan artist who ran the Village Art Market in Glare and taught adult art classes at Clare. Seitz won the Ratzer Award in 1960 and a special award in 1962 plus an Honorable Mention in the 1962 Flint Art Museum Show.

Garfield Township Fire Unit Arrives with New Equipment

Garfield Township residents celebrate the arrival of a 1948 International Truck fire engine with a John Bean high pressure pump and two aluminum ladders. The four officers and 15 volunteers, now part of the Tri-County Association, planned delivery from Capac Michigan after months of negotiations.

Clare High prepares for homecoming with a parade downtown Friday at 3 10 p m and a student driven schedule including a dance and a queen selection. The chosen queen will ride on a special parade float and lead post parade festivities.

Homecoming Parade Sets Greek Style Theme Across Clare District

October well baby clinics in Clare and Farwell, plus Harrison court dates, are listed ahead of homecoming events. The parade features up to a dozen floats, runner-up court members, and prizes of 10 dollars and smaller awards. Clare High School bands will perform, with a game vs Chesanine heralding the Green and White as conference favorites.

Clare Rosebush Discuss School Boundary Change

Clare Board of Education met October 8 1962 to discuss reorganizing Rosebush School District boundaries with mutual interest. Superintendent Richard Wheeler noted possible boundary shifts could affect adjoining lines. They also reviewed summer reading and band programs and approved continued NDEA funded testing guidance and counseling.

Clare protests call in Durand game over disputed touchdown

Clare authorities protest a disputed Durand touchdown call that ended the game 13-13. Clare coach George Perry says the ruling ignored the rules and affected the Mid Michigan B league title race as Clare played the rest of the game under protest.

Three Die After Freeway Crash Near Clare

A two car collision at the US 27 Freeway and Surrey Road three miles north of Clare killed three people and injured others. Darrell Phillips from Detroit and Ruth Bassett of St Ignace died soon after. John J Stockburger of Fort Wayne died the next day, Stockburger was Bassett's son. James Barney of Detroit and his family owned the car driven by Phillips and were involved in the crash. Barney remained in fair condition at Clare General Hospital.
