The Sentinel warns against the habit of following or crowding fire apparatus during alarms. Section 22 of Act No. 318 of 1927 prohibits driving within 500 feet or within one block of a fire unit when it responds. Penalties start at 100 dollars or 10 days, rising with repeat offenses, to 500 dollars and six months, plus a requirement to yield the road as fire vehicles pass.
Funeral services for Levi W Kennedy were held at Center Methodist church Rosebush with quartet singing and Rev. Leroy Whitney presiding. Kennedy born July 12 1856 in Carroll County Ohio died September 26 1927 near Rosebush after pneumonia illness. He came to Michigan at 22 and married Mary Hartgrove March 6 1877. three children Harriet Lahman Thomas and Mrs Rupert Scholéfield survive with his widow one brother and sister and many friends. Body laid to rest beside daughter in Mt. Pleasant. Clare Delphian society to meet Monday to discuss The Merchants of Venice.
Rosina Hschler, born in Berne Switzerland May 1866, died September 27 1927 in Greenwood township aged 61 years 4 months 4 days. She married Frederick Grouch in 1886 and lived in Amsterdam New York 1888 to 1896 then Michigan and Greenwood. Survived by husband five children two sisters and many friends. funeral at home with Rev H B Johnson officiating. interment Greenwood cemetery.
Notice to gas consumers states gas bills are payable now on or before the tenth of each month. Customers may pay at banks. Discount day moved to the tenth to harmonize across cities served by the Gas Corporation of Michigan.
In Clare during his campaign visit Governor Green pledged rapid paving of two state highways serving Clare County. A 3 year plan from the State Highway Department calls for U S 10 from Clare to Midland and U S 27 from Clare to Harrison, with funding to accelerate the project as funds allow.
The Methodist people will give a reception for Rev and Mrs Hurd and the teachers of the public this Friday evening at 8 o clock in the church parlors. Our people at Herrick and Farwell are invited and we cordially extend the invitation to the ministers and parishioners of the other Clare churches.
Mt Vernon Grange hosts a dance at their hall Friday evening with a 75 cent admission. Lunch is 15 cents per plate or 25 cents per couple. Mr and Mrs Thos Ramey and daughter of Pontiac visited the city this week.
Indignant residents from Clare and Isabella counties joined 175 volunteers Tuesday to open a mile of road along the east lake section, creating public access to Cranberry Lake for fishing and duck shooting. They protested against Georges Dean and conservation official Andrew Sabol over land rights and duck confiscations, asserting the lake is public and should be accessible.
Mrs. Howard Jones and Mrs. Forest M. Shumway suffered injuries in a head on collision between a Studebaker sedan and a Nash driven by Hol McCoy southeast of Clare. Mr. and Mrs. McCoy and their daughter also were injured. all were treated at Bronstetter hospital Mt. Pleasant.
Michigan towns have blocked streets within cities and villages that are designated trunk line routes during carnivals and fairs, detouring state highway traffic. The State Highway Department vows to enforce laws and ensure trunk lines remain open and undamaged.
The Carman Post warns the public about itinerant ex service men seeking lodging and fare under vague illness or exams. It urges citizens to avoid giving money or lodging unless vetted by the Larman Post welfare committee which will judge if the traveler is worthy of help.
Clifford Pulcifer and Miss Helen Pitcher wed at the Puleifer home in Vernon township on Sunday October two in the presence of about forty friends and relatives. Rev Woodard officiated with Miss Bessie Brown singing. The couple will reside in Lansing where the groom works for Rikard Lumber Co.
The Princess screens a Dempsey Tunney film program with Arizona Nights Fred Thomson and Silverline on Saturday and Rolled Stockings Junior Stars on Sun Mon. The Yankee Clipper special cast and a race for supremacy of America at sea are listed alongside patriotic themes. Also noted are sale ads for Yellow dent seed at $1.50 per crate and Wai Kapylinger.
The Clare Study Club opened its thirteenth year October 4 at Mrs. A. Anderson home with a 1 30 luncheon. New officers were installed by retiring president Mrs. Mulder. Mrs. Caple led into a program featuring a speech by Mrs. Martha Bicknell and a reading from Penrod. Thirty five members attended and planned a May district meeting.
The Clare Elevator Co installs a new 16 by 8 foot Buffalo Heavy Duty Auto Truck and wagon scale with 20 000 pound capacity. Concrete and steel construction. Devices aimed to meet rising demand for accurate heavy weighing.
A week long membership drive across six classes ended with the seventh grade first at 83 percent, Seniors second 74 percent, and Freshmen third 67 percent. Sophomores, Juniors, and eighth grade will host parties for the top three. About 160 joined, down 30 from last year. Rev H B Johnson spoke at the Friday Assembly.
Funeral services for Austin K. Martin, 74, were held at Lake George with Rev. H. B. Johnson officiating. Interment followed in Lake George cemetery. Martin, unmarried and living alone about two miles from the village, was found by neighbors Wednesday and is believed to have died at least a day earlier.
County supervisors and officials plan a fall session at the Court House in Harrison to handle county interests. The meeting starts next Monday and typically lasts a week to ten days.
The Hpworth Leagues of the Big Rapids District plan a three day institute in Hart starting November 4. The event replaces the former camp meeting convention with Bible Methods Missions instruction and recreation. A Friday banquet opens the program followed by Bible study and a field meet led by Rev Beacocs. Two silver cups will be awarded for largest delegate turnout and most points. The institute closes Sunday with a life work service.
Clare high school lost to Shepherd last Friday by six to nothing as the winning TD came with under ten seconds left. Clare showed flashes in the second and fourth periods with gains by Johnson Thayer and a clever Joslin block before ultimately failing to score. The game was postponed for a Barryton matchup to Monday afternoon due to injuries on the visiting team.
Over sixty youths gathered at the Total Methodist church last Monday for a rally to launch the year’s youth work. A lively program of games and sports drew excitement. short talks by Mr. and Mrs. Hurd complemented refreshments provided by the committee in charge. The social department plans a monthly event with varied activities.
Three Fredric Michigan youths Olson Baldwin 17 Ashley Short 14 and Maynard Arnold 17 were arrested after stealing oil from Clute's and a Texaco station to fund a trip south via U S 27. They admitted loading a loaded 22 caliber rifle in a touring car, but did not use it. Baldwin and Arnold received 30 days in Harrison county jail while Short, a minor, was placed on school probation.
Mary Riley Miller died peacefully at her home south of Cleveland on Saturday October 1 after a life spanning 1860 to 19 20. She married Paul Miller in 1883 and lived in Mineral Springs and Clare before settling in Vernon for about forty years. Survived by six children Nettie Carl Kate Paul Frank Winnie and two grandchildren Nany and Dorothy Miller. Funeral at the Methodist church with Rev H T Smith of Hart officiating. Cemetery interment at Cherry Grove.
