Pioneer Clare County Minister Passes Away

The Rev. Dr. Alexander Watt Johnstone died at eighty one in Bradenton Florida with wife and son nearby. Services were at Cadillac First Presbyterian Church Michigan with interment at Maple Hill Cemetery. He served Cadillac thirty six years and lived as Pastor Emeritus after 1931. He was born in Belfast Ireland in 1866 and educated in England. He is survived by a wife, son, daughter and three grandchildren.

Dead at Midland home John J Gordon

John J Gordon son of Roy Gordon of Clare and Mrs Gordon was found dead at his Midland home 3202 Dartmouth Drive. He was born January 24 1911 in Clare Michigan and died September 27 1947 in Midland at age 36 years 8 months 3 days. He left a wife Florence and numerous relatives. Funeral services were held at Wilson Funeral Home Midland with Dr E H Wilcox officiating and burial at Cherry Grove cemetery.

Rosebush Voters Back School District Consolidation

In a special election on September 29, voters from Isabella townships 1 2 3 4 6 and Vernon No. 3 approved consolidation 181 to 59. Supporters say the unity will boost a modern school system and community spirit. a five member school board will be elected in October.

Reckless Flyer at Clare Airport Draws City Police Attention

A visiting pilot at Clare Airport allegedly performed risky maneuvers after takeoff causing near misses with homes and prompting the police chief to urge responsible aviation. The flyer claimed proper height, while witnesses disputed it as an Aeronautical Administration rule issue. Chief Covell supported aviation growth but warned against stunts over the city.

Dr Mark Osterlin of Traverse City spoke to the Rotary Club on Rheumatic Fever in Children highlighting high death rates linked to prior childhood heart damage. He urged public education and early symptom awareness to reduce long term heart damage from childhood infections.

Giant Super Market to Open Here October 10

L A Walton president of Giant Super Markets announced a new Clare store across from the city park on West Fourth Street will open at 9:00 a m Friday October 10. Al Raymond will manage the store and locals will be hired. The Clare store is the eighth Giant in Central Michigan with locations in Mt Pleasant St Louis Breckenridge Midland Big Rapids and Alma. The shop features self service in most departments and refrigerated displays with a large free parking lot. A complete line of nationally advertised foods will be offered at low prices daily and opening specials appear in next week's Sentinel.

Exonoration of James A. Lewis by State Police

James A. Lewis of Farwell was released without hearing after being held on suspicion of grand larceny in Sault Ste. Marie. His brother in law Kenneth Todd confirmed that charges were withdrawn for lack of evidence. Police reported illness in his family prompted his departure and his mother’s death earlier in September.
