Vernon Pioneers Observe 56th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Levi Willey celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary at home on Mast Broadway Vernon. They recall early life in Clare and Isabella counties, 1880 marriage in Clare, farming on 40 acres, five children, and a move to Rosebush then Mt Pleasant. They note hard times, daily mail, and modern conveniences, with 56 candle cake and family gifts. Mr Willey is 83. They attend Presbyterian Rosebush. Mrs Willey in American Legion auxiliary. Family from out of town attended.

Oil crews near Clare report repeated setbacks at multiple wells. Currie Well casing collapsed at 2800 feet and was pulled then drilling resumed. Stewart Beatty No. 1 faced a collapsed bottom after 204 feet of pipe sinking. Hard Beattywell No. 1 reached 790 feet with drive pipe set at 400 feet. Fetters No. 1 drive pipe at 310 feet with casing finishing. Irwin No. 1 activity paused, expected to resume Friday.

Clare School Faculty Entertained by Kiwanis Club

The Clara Public school faculty were hosted by the Kiwanis club at Hotel Doherty on Wednesday evening. Webb McCall of Mt Pleasant Times spoke, followed by Supt. D Kennedy who praised the club’s cooperation. Acey Parker led in the Refrigeration contest with Leo Hampton. proceeds aid underprivileged children.

Clare County Women’s Republican Club Meeting

Officers of the C C W R C will be joint hostesses at tea in the Hotel Doherty Dining room on October 9 at 3 p m. Elmira Leosh Dies After Prolonged Illness

Mrs Elmira Leosh 45 of Clare died at her home September 25 after an eighteen week illness. Born Elmira Orvis in Marion on November 26 1890 she married twice first to Orman Huntley and later to Rev Leesh. She leaves two children two grandchildren a husband and many siblings and was buried at Cherry Grove after funeral services conducted by Rev Stella Short.

Ben Hickey Dies After Brief Illness At Home

Ben Hickey born June 14 1880 in Carleton Monroe county died Monday after pneumonia lasting from Thursday. He lived with his mother Mrs Catherine Hickey in Clare and worked as a cook in local restaurants. He leaves three brothers and four sisters. funeral at St Cecilia church with Rev Father Morrison officiating and burial in church cemetery.

Ram Exchange Day Set At Harrison Fairgrounds

Next Friday October 9 Clare County sheep owners are invited to bring thoroughbred rams in good condition to Harrison fairgrounds for sales or exchanges. The Michigan Purebred Sheep Breeders Association ram truck will deliver four ordered rams and offer others for sale. Breeds include Shropshire Hampshire and Oxford. Martha Ann Kingsbury born September 10 1845 in Hope township Barry Co Michigan died September 21 1926 at 205 8 7th St Clare aged 91 years 11 days She married John Kalls in 1861 and had one child Billa who died young Her second husband Jefferson Arnold was a Civil War soldier They moved to Clare in 1898 Mr Arnold died 1920 She was Seventh Day Adventist faithful and bible reader Survived by son William Arnold and daughters Mrs Frank Cosgrove and Mrs Alex McNeill with seven grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren Funeral at Clare M and church with ministers present Interment Farwell cemetery

Northern Road Men's Meeting at Clare a Success

The Twelfth Annual Session of the Northern Michigan Road Commissioners Association held in Clare on September 25 26 drew over four hundred attendees from 33 counties plus other regions. Delegates heard eight major talks on topics from dust control to WPA programs and financing, followed by a banquet and addresses including a welcome by Clare mayor Hampton.
