Couple Celebrate Fifty Years Of Married Life On Farm
Mr and Mrs Geo Schunk renewed their vows at their Sheridan township farm on September 17 to mark their fifty first wedding anniversary. Attendants included Mr and Mrs Albert Allen and Rev Henderick. They were wed September 17 1880 at her parents home in Midland and have lived on the same farm 51 years except four years with Tansing Lumber Co in Dodge. They have a daughter Mrs Bruce Williams and a son Stanley with six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One grandchild Roth Williams regional 4 H work could not attend. Granddaughters baked a snow cake with 61 candies. The cake was cut by the bride. A painted rose jar and Alladin lamp were given by the couple’s children and friends.

New Methodist Pastor Assumes Duties in Clare Group
The Rev. John E. Lockyer arrived in Clare and began ministry Sunday at the Clare Farwell and Herrick churches. An Englishman, he graduated from De Pauw and Garrett Institute, served as chaplain in World War I, and is married to Mrs. Lockyer, a nurse. They have three children Mercia Ewart and Gordon. The community offers a cordial welcome and wishes for a prosperous ministry.

Man Injured After Tank Ladder Fails
Alex McKinnon longtime Gas Corporation of Michigan supervisor was badly hurt Monday when a ladder collapsed during repairs on a large storage tank. A top manhole gas leak blew out as he descended causing a fall of about fifteen feet. he sustained a fractured skull, vertebra injury, two broken ribs and a deep leg cut. He was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor for treatment and was reported in serious condition but slowly improving.

Former Vernon Resident Killed Near Mt Clemens
Relatives received sad news last Saturday that George Bolen was killed near Mt Clemens by an automobile. Bolen, a Vernon township resident for several years, had many friends in the area. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from his Mt Clemens home with six brothers as pallbearers: Thos Hol and Dave of Vernon and James Charles and William of Flint.

John Brief No. 1 Brings In Good Oil Flow At Vernon Field
The Mellon Pollock Co. brought in John Brief No. 1 on section 22 Vernon three miles south of Clare. It flowed about 1680 barrels per day at 4:20 PM, with production later reduced to 800 barrels daily. Nearby wells show higher flow, fueling optimism for an excellent Vernon field. The Louis Thayer No. 1 well saw casing issues, halted after a bend was found, with a small oil baled before raising pipe. Campbell No. 1 in Section 36 produced about 1 700 000 cubic feet as operations push forward. Walter McClanahan, operator of Struble No. 1, is listed among owners.

New State Rulings Regulate Oil Well Drilling
The state conservation department announced new drilling rules effective September 18. Firms must post a 1000 bond per well, or 2500 blanket bond for multiple wells, logs become public after 90 days, all well types require permits, and stricter fire precautions apply. Arthur Horning of Clare died Sunday afternoon from heart trouble after collapsing during a baseball game. He was 46, born November 7, 1885, in Vernon township and married to Vina Creig in 1908, leaving a wife and three children Clarence Zora Kathern. Survived by siblings Anna Lee Agnes Philips Ervin and others, funeral held at Vernon cemetery with Rev. B T Smith officiating.

Pioneer Hoag Dies After Long Clare County Service
Joseph A. Hoag a longtime Clare county official and community figure died at his Harrison home after a brief illness. Born in Ontario March 16 1865 he moved to Michigan as a boy and later served as attendance officer for Clare county and held many public trusts. He was active in Mason Odd Fellows and Elks and remembered for cheerfulness and kindness. He leaves a wife Emma and daughter Mildred Diamond plus several siblings and grandchildren. Funeral at Congregational church September 27 with Dr A W Johnstone officiating.
