Pigs Treated With Iron to Prevent Anemia

J P Willman of Cornell University reports that young pigs raised indoors risk anemia due to iron deficiency. Drenching with a ferrous sulphate solution weekly for six weeks starting at 3 to 4 days old prevents this. Doses range from one third teaspoon for under a week old to one teaspoon for three weeks old, prepared by dissolving a pound of dried ferrous sulphate in a quart of hot water and applied to the sow's udder. Merely adding iron to feed or water is ineffective.
