Rehearsals for the Messiah progress well with a December 17 afternoon performance planned. Clare officials urge full participation and regular rehearsals next week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 86 in the High School auditorium.
Three wells were completed in the Vernon field last Saturday, each flowing at 300 barrels per day. Willey No 1 sits in northwest quarter section 22, Harring No 2 on the east side of the same section, and a third well in southwest quarter section 23. Woods No 3 and Brief No 4 on section 22 are ready to spud in, while Callihan No 1 and Smith No 1 drilling began last week. Mood No 1 and Duncan No 1 drilling paused temporarily in section 9.
A Methodist church Sunday School banquet last week featured class themed tables and a judging panel. Prizes went to the Beginners class for a circus table, while other entries included turkey gobblers with fruit, a Japanese garden, and a Cub Scout bear den centerpiece.
Notice states the treasurer Wm Chapple will collect Vernon township taxes at Rosebush bank on Saturdays in December with no fee charged. The message underscores ongoing December collections and identifies the treasurer as the contact for payment during the specified Saturdays.

In Advance Grange Hall Elm Grove a mass meeting is set for Tuesday evening December 5 at 8 30 to form a Cooperative Protective Benefit Association for ages 14 to 55 in good health. Marion has ran the plan 22 years with a low cost, annual dues one dollar to join and one dollar assessment after each death. The fund is insured by bonds for the treasurer. Death rate is 11 per 1000. Marion group exceeds 250 members with annual assessments from 8 to 5 dollars per member. A certificate is issued for beneficiaries upon death. Continued on page six.
Wm H Bicknell & Co place a conspicuous Christmas seal coin box in their shop to raise funds for early tuberculosis detection among Michigan school children. The box features a festive design with three figures bringing home a yule log and bears the double barred cross emblem of the anti tuberculosis society. Proceeds from 1933 seals will support tuberculosis work in Michigan schools next season.
The Clare Hay Grain and Bean Co office was entered Saturday evening around 8 230 o clock and found by Ward Boody. A voice warned him not to enter the back part. The Clare Cheese factory was also entered that night with a leather coat and a new automatic shotgun stolen.
Members of the Hunting and Fishing Club of Harrison announce their annual banquet at the Congregational church on December 6. Speaker George Hogarth director of the State Department of Conservation will discuss state issues. Jack Miner of Canada will lecture on birds and wildlife with moving pictures. Banquet fee is one dollar for members.
The Bryant home mourns as baby Billy Jean Bryant dies after a brief pneumonia illness at six months nine teen days. Survived by parents Donald and Ernest and grandparents Mr and Mrs Bi Fisre of Clairkston, funeral held Wednesday at home with Rev Ay D Teldsr delivering the message at Sherry Grove.
State Highway Department advertised ten federal grant highway projects totaling 322 925 dollars with bids to be opened December 1. The department already oversees 79 projects in 41 counties with under 3 447 626 04 dollars in active contracts and 11 more projects totaling about 500 000 dollars opened November 24 bringing counties involved to 46.
A new Hotel Doherty sponsored team will play alongside a second squad of former high school stars. Coach Brown, once a Varsity player at Alma College, leads both teams managed by Leo Hampton with Arthur Figing as business manager. First home game slated for Wednesday December 13 against Harrison CCC boys.
Clayton Barber and Miss Daisy Schaar were married Saturday at the Baptist church with Rev. A. Di Valder officiating. The groom's brother and a sister of the bride, both from Vernon, served as attendants, as the couple plan to establish their home in Steink.
The Fred Verette No 1 well in section 23 produced over 300 barrels after Tuesday night drilling. Stoughwell No 5 derrick and Housewell No 3 equipment are under setup in sections 23 and 26. Smockwell No 2 pit is being dug with a derrick due next week. Bowman No 4 derrick near section 22 center nears completion with machinery to follow.
Mrs. Mary Green, president, led Clare Study Club on Civic Day at Nellie Feighner’s home with Caroline Kemp assisting. The group debated Christmas baskets, voted to join the Red Cross as a club unit, and heard a program by Ethel Schlegel and Nellie Jane Davy plus piano solos by Nelda Callihan Jones.
Sophia May Kennedy Fisher died after a long illness at her Farwell home on November 22 1938 aged 63 years 5 months and 16 days She was born in Lucknow Ontario June 6 1864 and married William Fisher July 18 1887 They had three children Mabel E William J and Frank H She leaves five grandchildren three sisters and two brothers She lived in Canada before moving to Saginaw in 1886 and Farwell in 1888 She was active in the Woman's Christian Union and Farwell Methodist Church Funeral attendance included relatives from Jackson Iron River and Stambaugh Continued on Page Six.
Post offices will strive to handle holiday mail without delay but ask public cooperation due to enormous volume. Christmas Day closings and mail reach timing are noted, with Davy as postmaster cited.
The Clare County Employment Service Bureau in the Clare County Savings Bank building coordinates the Civil Works Administration program. A five member committee led by M. B. Gallagher handles operations, listing all unemployed in the county and arranging highway and municipal projects. Projects include four one mile M-66 segments east of US 27, a Long Lake site, Hight Point Lake, Garfield township, and a west M-66 segment near Harrison, employing 359 workers at peak. 120 more are to be ready by December 8 for US 27 paving north of Harrison. minimum wage is forty cents per hour.
Mrs. Seeley Johnson of West Grant shows harvested black eyed peas from this fall. Seed came from Illinois to plant eight hills. the crop yielded milkcrack pods 8 to 9 inches long with 13 to 14 peas each, reaching 24 to 30 inches tall. Praised as excellent cattle and hog feed. Johnson plans to replant next year.
Samuel Phillips 68 was found dead in bed by his wife on November 22 after months of illness from cancer. Funeral services were held Friday at 1 pm at Manton M E Church with Rev. B B Sivem. interment followed in Manton cemetery. He was born November 15 1878 in Port Bilgin Canada and moved to Michigan at 13. Survived by widow Jennie A Phillips three children Esther Kibbe Ralph and Clarence seven grandchildren one Willard Phillips a sister in Seattle two brothers in Idaho and one in Camperville Canada.
Miss Hazel Carr daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Carr and Mr Albert Roland son of Mr and Mrs William Roland of Greenwood Township united in marriage in a ceremony reported with limited readable text.
