Michigan health officials urge immediate polio vaccination to ensure protection during the peak summer season. Dr. Albert E. Heustis outlines a three shot series with specific intervals and notes full immunity only after the third dose.
Clare county squeezes in a three day Winter Sports Weekend from January 25 to 27 with hunting fishing on trails and lakes. The event features a queen contest for the county’s popular girls and promises skiing ice skating and heavy turnout if snow favors the weather.
Mary Tice of Clare High School won first place in the regional I Speak for Democracy speech contest held on Tuesday November 13. She competed against students from Farwell Barryton Remus Weidman Sacred Heart and Mt Pleasant high schools. Mary received an RCA portable radio and a 25 dollar savings bond presented by Mt Pleasant contest chairman Gene Duckworth. Judges included Dr Elbert Bowen Central Michigan College Rev Cutler Mt Pleasant and Professor Storey Alma College.
Mona Sonntag Clare wins Northland Hardware Norge contest worth 7500 in prizes for solving a puzzle. Dora Mitchell Harrison Corda Rose Clare June Yoell Clare among three other principal winners. About 300 entries were received after the October 18 puzzle coupon in The Clare Sentinel. Winning rules rewarded correctness, skill, originality.
Monday night at Clare Rifle and Pistol Club eighteen shooters chased top honors. Dave Seiter Jr. led with a 291.8 average while Jack Hemstreet followed with 987.42. Woyd Norcutt placed third at 986.14 and Wayne Pitts secured the shells with 283.77.
Clare County Prosecuting Attorney Robert H. Campbell warned Christmas tree producers and other sellers about the risk of checks from strangers or non residents. He urged accepting certified checks or bank money orders, and requiring proper identification and proof the check is good. If the check cannot be cashed at a bank the risk is high for any purchase.
The Clare High Varsity Club sponsors its first Pigskin Prom on November 80 in the gymnasium. Boys are urged to wear sports jackets and girls their Sunday best. President Dick Roe reminds students alumni and other guests must register by the afternoon of the party.
Kathy Archbold, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Archbold of Washington Road, serves as a patrol girl guiding children safely across streets and requesting drivers to move obstructing cars. She enjoys swimming and softball when weather allows.
The Michigan Optometric Association warns red is dangerous for hunters since it is poorly distinguished by color blind and normal vision. Tests show yellow as the safest color, with orange second, while green and plaids are easier to identify than reds or blues.
Clare High School actors joined Ferris Institute for the Third Annual Drama Day Clinic on Saturday November 17. Richard Hentz demonstrated budget stage craft while Prof Fred Bush spoke on Broadway plays. Afternoon featured The Man Upstairs and Stagedoor. Attendees included Eunice Demarest La vina White and many Clare residents.
Rev Gordon Speer of Ypsilanti Congregational Church has a book accepted for the Third Annual World Affairs Book Fair in New York City November 14 24. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace notified that Talks To Youth was chosen for its cultural and political significance. Speer and his wife were invited as guests of the Endowment. he has spoken in Clare.
Graveside services were held at Cherry Grove Cemetery on Saturday November 17 at 1 p m for the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Elton Brasington. The infant was born November 15 1956 and the James Jphenson Funeral Home facilitated arrangements.
Garold Jones reported the first buck at opening time with an eight pointer weighing about 16 514 pounds. Murl Houghton claimed a buck at 7 15 am while Dick Groves from the Upper Peninsula brought a ten point prize. The Cornucopia Club crews returned empty handed but took the season’s edge. A week remains for more trophy hunts.
Net receipts of the State Motor Vehicle Highway Fund for the third quarter of 1956 totaled 29 three hundred twenty six dollars and ninety nine cents, distributed to the State Highway Department, counties, cities and incorporated villages. Clare county received 55 189 dollars and 62 cents with Clare city getting 2 983 03 Harrison will receive 1 649 68 and Farwell 1 491 66 Gladwin county totaled 49 120 33 with Gladwin city receiving 3 302 45 Isabella county received 85 437 31.
Clare Library announces a National Book Week display with new books for all ages. Librarian Virginia Richardson notes mysteries for teens four new Rosamund Du Jardin novels for youth and many titles for children and adults including A Nun's Story by Kathleen Hulk Me as the current month’s pick.
Dr BE C Beck of Central Michigan College spoke to Clare PTA on They Knew Paul Bunyan detailing lumber folklore and songs. The Community Calendar project earned 407.48, with prizes awarded to calendar sellers Mike Marley Jie Ham merberg Mike Tice and John Russell. Room mothers provided refreshments after the program.
Central Michigan College sponsors a weekly TV series on WWTV Cadillac starting November 17 at 10 am. The half hour program airs Saturdays with the English department providing the first hour and Dr E Beth hosting the opening segment on folklore with guests Jack Benford and Leon May. Subsequent Saturdays feature Hazel Envy, John Hepler, and Fred Bush discussing literature topics.
Central Michigan College Music department selects four guest soloists for Mendelssohn Beilah at a Festival Chorus and Orchestra concert announced by Dr Eugene B F Grove director of choral groups. The event will be presented by the Westival Chorus and Orchestra.
John Freeman named magazine salesman with most sales earning 151.36 and a four speed phonograph plus trophy. Lydabelle Bicknell second with over 75 and a blanket set. Daily high salesmen listed. Pixie Dog awards to 25-dollar club members. additional Certificates of Achievement awarded to multiple students.
Pioneer sportswriter George Perry notes Clare High's 1956 basketball team under new coach Perry. Nine returnees train including four starters from 1955 with John Miller at 6'2 and others at 6'ft or taller. Seven seniors and two juniors contend for starting roles as the Green and White open December 4 at Short, then host Ithaca December 7 in the first Mid Michigan Conference game.
Michigan Bell Telephone files with the Public Service Commission for a 5 percent intrastate rate rise to fund wage adjustments and rising costs. Local manager T C Maher cites higher payrolls, taxes, and materials, plus a rebalance of rate schedules reflecting service growth in Clare and surrounding areas. Proposed revenue increase about 12.5 million annually with most going to taxes, while investments and construction continue at high levels.
Clare County Ministerial Association hears Rev. Harold Taber outline uses of slide and film projectors in religious education. He urges starting small and using aids as a supplement, not a substitute, with prep time doubled and materials access noted. Next meeting set for Harrison on December 11 1956.
The Chapel of St. Ann hosts a Thanksgiving Day Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. in the chapel beside the Ideal theatre entrance. The public is invited.
Prof. Warren W. Chase of the University of Michigan advises deer should be carried on top of a car to keep meat and hide from heat. He recommends neck or shoulder shots for better skin, skinning with a dull knife, drying the skin, salting the flesh side, and sending to a commercial tanner. Also notes a drop in deer hunter traffic on the Straits of Mackinac ferries in mid November 1955 versus 1956, with 14 308 vehicles versus 18 544 in four days to Nov 13.
The Automobile Club of Michigan releases a 20 page illustrated booklet titled The State of Our Parks. It cites overcrowding and limited funds as issues and offers five financing plans for a five year improvement program. Copies are free from Auto Club offices or Motor News Detroit.
