Clare County officials led by Art Damoth outline Victory Loan efforts with local Gallants ready to solicit investors. The drive aims to fund wounded service members and allied relief while supporting national victory assets as communities back the war effort.
The sixteenth annual Farwell school carnival at Surrey High on Friday night November 9 drew strong support and produced gross receipts of 416.88. Principal Grasman outlined aims to unite students teachers and community while teaching planning and teamwork through the event. The carnival committee chaired by faculty and students coordinated activities with Supt R H Mick handling finance and various staff managing concessions publicity and voting.
Four boys from Houghton Lake drove to Harrison on October 26. Duane Dehoff 19 pled guilty to stealing a rim tire and tube from Wm Hileman's car and is bound over to Circuit Court on a felony charge. Eugenie Kerns 238 owner of the car paid $28 court costs and was sentenced to county jail fifteen days. Donald Buntley 22 and his brother Dorian 17 were placed on ninety days probation for concealing knowledge of the theft.
John W Neithercut a Dundalk Ontario native born June 25 1857 died at his Clare Michigan home November 10 1945 at eighty eight years four months and sixteen days He moved to Michigan in 1884 farmed at Colonville retired 1918 served as Sheridan township treasurer and school officer and was active in the Methodist Church He leaves two sons two daughters in law six grandchildren two great grandchildren and many relatives Funeral services were held at Thurston Funeral Home with Rev Chas B Hahn officiating and interment in Cherry Grove cemetery Attending from out of town were Col and Mrs C M VanBenschoten Flint Mo Mr and Mrs Harvey Kennedy and many others from Ontario Michigan and nearby communities
The Young Peoples Christian Endeavor of Eagle Dover Brown Corners Colonville Arthur Center and Elm Grove churches will hold their quarterly meeting at Eagle Church of God next Sunday evening November 18 at 8:00. Rev. Gerald Foster of Brown City will speak and each church will contribute to the musical program. All young people are urged to attend and older folks are asked to observe the community youth work.
State Highway Department installs No Parking Here at Any Time signs on North side of West Fifth Street to ease traffic congestion. Enforcement to be carried out by State Police and city officers with public cooperation requested.
Circuit court will convene in Harrison court rooms next Monday for the November term with a criminal calendar including The People vs Paul Oakley and others, and a chancery calendar with several divorces and injunctions. Pettit jurors listed by townships are included for November 1945.
A public notice states Thanksgiving Day will be a national holiday and warns the Sentinel office will be closed. Advertisers must submit all copy one day early, with cooperation requested from General Electric dealer Be Gales & Service and Glare HUE.
Arthur Grosvenor, Sr a long time Pere Marquette Railway operator, began duties as Clare local agent after a rail career starting in 1910 with C. & N. W. and later with Ann Arbor Railroad including postings at Cohocton, Coleman, Baldwin, Scottville, and Flint. Robert W. Ryan is filling the position temporarily.
The Clare Community Council met at the City Library on a Thursday evening in November. John Rodabaugh presided with representatives from Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Methodist Church, Rebekahs, Clare Study Club, Congregational Guild, Red Cross, PTA, Masons, Boy Scouts, Student Body present. Officers were elected with Jess Hampton as chair, John Rodabaugh as vice chair, Mrs. Harold Hemming treasurer, and Mrs. Earl Sternamai secretary. The group discussed calendar changes due to paper shortages and a planned roller skating rink site. The next meeting is set for December 13 with civic leaders on the executive board.
Clare County has met its United War Fund quota joining a small group of counties in Michigan to reach the goal. The effort supports the National War Fund and its affiliates, plus local groups including the Salvation Army and Boy and Girl Scouts. County Chairman Harold B. Hughes notes strong cooperation and anticipates a final tally that still favors Clare County in the state ranking.
The Clara Rotary Club met at Barnes Cafe at noon with president W N Byers presiding. Rotarian guests Harold Howard and H Allen Morrow of Mt Pleasant attended along with Ben Ewer Clare and Tom Demarest Lansing. John Cobb and Dave Youzva spoke on the Youth Center in Clare.
Health Department holds a free baby clinic at Clare City Hall next Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 11:30 for immunizations against smallpox and diphtheria. Mothers invited to bring babies for preventive care and mothers’ well being.
The Coldwater Gilmore Vernon and Wise township teachers met at Vernon Center School on Friday afternoon November 7. Ethel Marshall was named chairwoman and Ruby Jackson secretary. James A. Knapp, the School Commissioner, spoke on juvenile crime noting a 25 percent rise since 1940 and urged a December 28 Home and Family Week effort. The next gathering is set for December 7 at Andersonville School.
Mrs Joseph L Cour dies at Clare Hospital after years of ill health following a hip fracture. Born Augusta Tonnett in Newport Kentucky January 30 1859 she lived in Chesaning and Clare Michigan. Survived by three daughters Mrs Laurence Jackson Mrs Clare Henderson and Mrs Warren Hale and son Ramey plus a sister and many relatives. funeral at St Cecilia’s Church with Requiem High Mass.
A Hunters Ball is set for Saturday evening at 10 C F Hall in Parnell. Tickets are two dollars at the door.
Northern Michigan awoke to the state’s first postwar deer season with an estimated quarter million hunters entering the woods at dawn Thursday. Weather across the Straits favored hunting as temperatures ranged from 20 to 26 in the Upper Peninsula and near 40 south of the Straits. The conservation department estimates the deer herd at around one million, aided by mild winters, good summer cover, and a strong fawn crop. A hunting accident near Houghton Lake sent Glen Cowlas to Charlevoix Hospital in serious condition after being shot in the left shoulder. Local hunters from Claye and Aurora headed to the Hampton camp at Houghton Lake to pursue game in Roscommon County.
August Wilhelm Giers born May 18 1861 Frietheim Germany died November 6 1945 near Harrison Michigan aged eighty four years five months nineteen days. Survived by five children and many grandchildren. Funeral at Thiveston Funeral Home Friday at 2 pm with burial in Cherry Grows Cemetery.
