Clare Study Club continues study of Constitution

About twenty five members met November 8 at Manistee with Mrs. Myra Asline to study The Constitution. President Mrs. Genevieve Fleming led the meeting with program chair Mrs. Louisa Bowler guiding Mrs. Clara Sternaman as chair. Speakers covered George Washington James Madison Benjamin Franklin and Edmond Randolph. Eva Lowrey led patriotic singing and Federation report. Beulah Caple attended as delegate. adjourned for a Thanksgiving Tea in two weeks with Mrs. Bowler.

New Electrical and Radio Store Opens Saturday

The Goodnight Electric and Radio store opens to the public Saturday morning in the Hasler building, former Mitchell Furniture Co. space. Mr and Mrs Goodnight invite shoppers to explore lines of GE products, Hot Point irons, Maytag washers, and farm radios. A radio technician will service all makes, and ladies visiting Saturday receive a souvenir.

Mrs Sarah Burch Remembered in Michigan Funeral

Mrs Sarah Jane Burch died peacefully November 4 at her East Seventh Street home. Born May 22 1853 in Shiawassee County Michigan she later lived in Saginaw Wise Township Isabella County and St. Petersburg Florida. Funeral at Clare Methodist Church with burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery. survivors include son Frank and daughter in law Mrs Clyde White plus nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Two Fishermen Missing After Lake Michigan Fishing Trip

State Police search Houghton Lake for Ernest Hopkins and Harvey Coffey of Flint after a Tuesday fishing trip. A found outboard boat, oar, thermos, and life belt wash ashore. airplane drafted Thursday to aid in locating the missing men. Larman Post and Unit Represented at District Meet

The Tenth District Association of the American Legion and Auxiliary held a major Coleman meeting with nearly 300 attendees, including 21 from Clare Post. Alexander B. Wylie resigned as district adjutant and Jay O. Bellinger was chosen to replace him. The event featured a Grayling Drum and Bugle Corps parade and speeches by Department Commander Cox. Attendees from the community included Francis Jackson, Stanley Masten, Leo Oden, Omer Parent, Conrad Walker, Elery Wright, A Wylie, Frank Kepplinger, Kyle McKinnon, Iyone Gorr, Myrtle Harger, Hazel Hawkins, and Nellie Sherwood.

Mrs Ellen Lockwood Dies At Son's Home In Rosebush

Mrs Ellen Lockwood born April 11 1849 in Northumberland Ontario died November 6 1936 at her son William's home in Rosebush age 87 years 6 months and 25 days She was first married to James Thompson in 1868 and had twelve children five who survived At age 19 she married Thompson then moved to Clare in 1889 Later she married Albert Lockwood who died in 1924 She was an active member of the M B H church and Ladies Aid in Clare, spent her last years with her son, and remained cheerful through illness.

Fetters No 1 Test In Vernon Twp Proves Dry Hole

Gloom spread as Fetters No 1 failed to find oil after deep drilling in Vernon Township. Monday pay line at 38731 feet suggested a good well, but Tuesday results proved a dry hole. Several other wells in surrounding sections report progress with various depths and issues.

Two Clare Men Injured In Rosebush Crash

Arthur Parish and Riley Kirkpatrick were injured Wednesday night when a Ford V8 driving at high speed struck their truck one mile north of Rosebush on US 27. Parish was thrown from the vehicle, Kirkpatrick suffered shoulder and back injuries, and both cars were damaged as the Ford burned briefly before help arrived. The Ford’s driver was severely injured and not identified.

Women’s Republican Club Elects Officers at Annual Meet

The Thelare County Women’s Republican Club met October 30 and elected a slate by the nominating committee. President Helen Heber leads with first vice H A Anderson and second vice Roberta Bicknell. secretary Lota Green, treasurer Lou Brown. district chairmen Oman, Schaaf, and Hutchinson. Retiring president Mabel Mulder received thanks for her leadership. The group praised its early campaign activity and collaboration with county groups in support of a better America.

The Clare Good Literature Club met November 10 with Mrs Kennedy. Barbara Caple and Mavis Kennedy presented piano selections. Dr Beck of C T College spoke on Modern Fiction in American Schools, noting shifts from journalistic to schooled writers and naming London Davis Hearn and Porter among predecessors.

Freeman Citizen Dies After Stroke in Freeman Township

Mrs. William Blain suffered a stroke on Tuesday November 8 and died that night at her Freeman township home. Survived by husband William Blain and eight children plus sixteen grandchildren. Armistice Day Observed By Special Program

The Armistice Day program was held at the local high school with veterans and the American Legion Auxiliary in attendance. The observance featured a band, invocations, pledges, skits on education and curriculum, an Americanization address by H. D. Kennedy, and the Star Spangled Banner. John Dunlop and Kennedy gave speeches on war effort and world peace as post office staff—veterans—were excused to attend.
