Incumbent mayor Chris Smith wins a third term on the Clare City Commission. Nancy Gunnerson the first woman elected to the commission, and Tom Johnson also win seats. The top two vote getters will serve two years and the third one year.

Budget hinges on tax levy and library share in Clare County

Clare County Board of Commissioners approved a record 1978 budget of 2 011 398 68 including federal revenue sharing and CETA funds. The 1 034 640 65 tax levy rises from 959 522 39 with over 300 000 cut to requests. Equal revenue sharing split for Farwell Harrison Clare libraries set at 3333 33 each this year and 5000 next year.

City adopts radar unit for Clare police use

Police Chief Elly Tice announced the Clare police department has installed a radar unit and officers begin using it Tuesday to clock speeding motorists. The device aims to curb speeds, with warnings for drivers under normal conditions unless they are over ten miles per hour above the limit or in adverse weather and school zones.

Clare to get full service Secretary of State office

Clare will gain a full service Secretary of State office to issue drivers licenses and license plates. Ken Martz of Ken's Hardware won the low bid for a long term lease and will build a new office on Schoolcrest near his store for state tenancy. Construction starts this month with civil service staff.

Michigan National Guard copters forced down by fog

Three Michigan National Guard helicopters with six crew members forced to land in a field south of the Harrison interchange due to heavy fog. The two gunships and one QH-58 from Co A 38th Aviation Battalion based at Grand Ledge spent the night in Harrison. They were en route to Camp Grayling from Grand Ledge for a week of tactical maneuvers and training.

Harrison man wounded while attempting to stop shooting

Mt. Pleasant State Police report Greg Heintz an 18 year old of 100 East Part Street Harrison was shot in the left thigh by a 22 caliber rifle. Heintz was treated at Clare Osteopathic Hospital after trying to seize the rifle from Robert Glen Ehle 19 who threatened to shoot himself.

Warrants Sought in Lake 13 Farwell Property Damage Case

Clare County Sheriff Department plans to seek warrants for five individuals over destruction of property in the Lake 13 area near Farwell with estimated damages between $2000 and $3000.
