Two Farm Homes Destroyed by Fire in One Week
In Clare area two farm houses were burned to the ground within seven days. Mrs. Ab Little and her daughter-in-law escaped as a gasoline stove fire spread from the oven to a porch, cutting water supply and delaying fire crews. The Iserhoth home near Lake, bought from Chas Cook, burned at 5:15 Tuesday, with contents lost and only partial insurance. The Iserhoth family now lives with Mr. and Mrs. Eneix.

Navy orders curb overseas newspaper mailings to addressees
Effective July 1 1945 the Navy and Post Office Departments regulate mailings to Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel overseas. Individual copies mailed to fleet post offices require written subscription or renewal requests by the addressee. Relatives may pay but only if the addressee initiated the request. Complimentary or advertiser copies not tied to requests are not accepted. Publishers must show a certificate Mailed in conformity with P O D Order No 27851 with the address.

Memorial Day Program Observance in City Hall to Cemetery
On Wednesday May 30 1945 a Memorial Day program forms at City Hall at 930 AM leaves at 10 and proceeds to Cherry Grove Cemetery with service at 1100. Rev H L Cleveland and Rev Charles Kleinhardt speak the firing squad salutes the national anthem and taps are planned. Walter H Larman Post 128 American Legion leads with invitation to ex servicemen and public and a no parking request at the cemetery drive.

Mrs S McClain Dies After Ill Health in Clare
Nellie Wyckoff McClain, longtime Hamilton township resident, died May 15 1945 in Clare Michigan at 64 after eleven years of ill health. She leaves husband Samuel and ten children, plus nineteen grandchildren. Funeral held May 17 at Gladwin Methodist Church with Rev Chas Hahn and Rev John Scott officiating.

Scouters Attend Appleblossom Camp Training Meeting
Forty one Scouters joined Dr M L Smith head of Rural Education at Central Michigan College at Appleblossom Camp on May 19 and 20. Valley Trails Council staff with Woody Smith led Health and Safety and Camping courses. Awards were given to twelve for Health and Safety and eighteen for Camping. Emil Pfister received the Scouters Key for five years of training. Mitch Mitchell will begin his nineteenth year as Camp Cook at Camp Rotary. A Cubbers Round Table will meet May 29 at Scout Headquarters to discuss yearly program planning for Packs.

Judge Leland W. Carr of the Ingham Circuit Court voided a Michigan Public Service Commission order requiring a 3.5 million dollar refund by Michigan Bell Telephone Company to customers. The judge ruled the commission lacked authority for retroactive refunds, noting rates are typically prospective. The 1944 order followed an excess profits tax review. The company’s appeal continues.

Little David Gordon Hogg Laid At Rest In Delwin Cemetery
David Gordon Mogg born December 2 1944 died May 23 1945 at five months old. Funeral services were conducted at Thurston Funeral Home May 23 officiated by David Bailey of the Harrison Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Buried in Delwin Cemetery. Survived by parents Pvt Elton Mogg and Mrs Mogg two brothers Jerry J and Larry Gene grandparents Mr and Mrs Floyd Callitian and Mr and Mrs Joe Mogg of Coleman and many relatives. Pvt Mogg stationed in the Philippines.

Mrs. June Haines received a May 4 letter from Lt. Kenneth Eynes saying he had been liberated and was at Lu beck awaiting transport to England and expecting to be home in weeks. He had been missing since November 5 1943 and later reported a prisoner of war in Germany.

Attention is renewed to the fact that thousands of copies of publications are being received daily at ports of embarkation Army Post Offices which do not bear complete addresses in that both a unit or organization ad dress and an A P O number are not given. Effective immediately, postmasters should decline to accept publications addressed to Army personnel in care of postmasters at ports of embarkation unless both a unit address and an A P O number are included in the addresses. A number of Sentinels have already been returned to this office because of insufficient addresses and anyone subscribing for members of the Armed Forces who have not given us complete addresses are requested to do so at once.

Midland Kiwanis Dinner Hosts Magnesium Talk
Art Damoth presided as Clare Kiwanis Club president at the Hotel Doherty dinner. Midland Kiwanis presented a program led by Chet Maher with Eugene Perrin of Dow Chemical discussing magnesium and a sound film on producing it from sea water. The Dow plant film was shot in Freeport Texas and notes magnesium as the third lightest metal with broad postwar uses. Dow magnesium alloys come in sand castings sheet metal forgings and extrusions. The club voted to hold future dinners Wednesdays at 6 36 p m except Memorial Day week when it shifts to Tuesday.

Soldier sends war souvenirs home to Vernon father
PFC Jerome C. Flood sent a comprehensive collection of war souvenirs to his father Peter Flood of Vernon township. The items include a large Nazi flag, French phrase cards, table mats, pictures of German officials, numerous small photos, and many other artifacts gathered from wartime service.

The Franklin fought for fifteen hours after a Japanese dive bomber hit the carrier. Casualties totaled 341 dead 481 missing and over 300 wounded. Despite repeated air attacks the ship survived and reached the Brooklyn Navy Yard for repairs, a testament to American ships and crew.
