Clare Camp Trailer sparks 4500 acre game farm in Clare county

Detroit industrialist Harry M. Jewett bought a Clare Camp Trailer and, after discovering a scenic site near Rose City in Ogemaw county, established Grousehaven a 4500 acre property with eight lakes two trout streams and a central farm. He propagates quail pheasants and native grouse by trapping predators and teaching locals to trap vermin to protect game stocks. He hosts annual farm tours and barbecues to educate Clare county farmers on game propagation with support from the U S Department of Agriculture and State Conservation Department. Jack Miner spoke at last year’s barbecue.

Funeral of David Harper Held Saturday

David Harper died after a long life centered in Barry and Isabella counties. Born May 2 1850 he moved to Barry county as a boy and later settled near Coldwater married Margery Tanner in 1873. He leaves Martha Pelch, son Arthur and many grandchildren. The funeral was held at home last Saturday with Rev W W Hurd officiating.

Firemen seek pension amendment for state constitution

Chief Nathan Joseph of Ludington leads petitions across Michigan to amend the state constitution to pension veteran policemen and firefighters. If enough signatures are gathered, the issue appears on the November ballot funded by the state corporation tax. petitions must be filed by July 1 and checked by June 15.

George Y. Collins Passes Away in Clare

George V. Collins died Wednesday after eighteen years in Clare. He worked at Clare County Savings Bank and served in fraternal and welfare groups. Funeral at Wheaton Avenue residence this afternoon at two, with interment in Cherry Grove. Obituary to appear next week.

Clare Loses After Upset in Monday Baseball

Clare high school baseball dropped a 10 to 8 decision to Reed City after leading 8 9 through eight innings. Joslin started the mound work for Clare with ten strikeouts before Stanley relieved in the eighth. Reed City added three runs in the ninth on a walk, a single and a double by Miller to seal the come from behind win.

Former Clare Laddies Mourn Hodson Death at Great Lakes

The former Clare lads learn of Kenneth H Hodson’s death while training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago on May 10 after a short throat illness. Born March 14 1910 in Fostoria Ohio he moved with his parents to this city five years ago where his father worked for Michigan Bell. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon with Rev Hagel officiating and burial in Greenwood cemetery.

Clare Hardware Looted Saturday Night by Thieves

The Clare Hardware and Furniture Company store was entered last Saturday night and a quantity of fishing tackle guns and ammunition was taken. Thieves forced rear windows with an iron bar and pried open second story furniture department windows but found nothing missing there. An attempt to enter Tatman grocery behind was not successful. No arrests yet. officers are actively investigating and have formed definite crews.

Peter Akey born in Ontario Canada on December 6 1852 died at his Vernon Hill home May 16 1928. He married Sarah Melissa Orr on April 5 1877 and they had five children three died in infancy. Survived by wife two sons Fred of Flint and Ernest of Mt Pleasant five brothers two sisters in Ontario three grandchildren two great grandchildren. Funeral at home last Friday with Hiter Burt Beaverton officiating and interment at Farwell Cemetery.

Clare High Teams Place Three In Regional Meet

Clare high school track team scored 13.5 points at the regional meet held at Central State College field Mt Pleasant last Saturday. Thayer finished second in the 220 yard dash Parker tied for third in the high jump Sharpe and Grover won first and fourth in the running broad jump. The Clare relay quartet Thayer Johnson Sharpe Leis took second in the 880 yard relay. The team placed behind Coopersville which won the Class C meet with 46 points.

War Veterans to Attend Sunday Memorial Service

Memorial services will be held at the Congregational church next Sunday morning. The American Legion posts of Farwell and Clare will attend in a body. Civil War and Spanish-American War veterans are guests of honor. The choir will provide patriotic music and Rev. H. B. Johnson will give the address as a guest comrade in friendship.

Mrs. J. A Simpson Laid To Rest

Mrs. J A Simpson died after months of illness and was laid to rest in Cherry Grove cemetery. The service at Church of God was led by Pastor Mrs Laura McCrea with Rev Mrs House of Farwell assisting. She was born Rachel Collar in Pottersville New York on April 7 1846 and moved to Michigan in 1901. She had two sons J A of Mt Pleasant and J of Oklahoma, a daughter Mrs B Butcher of Clare, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Clare High School Holds Fourth Annual Athletic Banquet

The Clare high school athletic association held its fourth annual banquet in the school gym Friday with 150 attendees. Otis Sanley presided, the Girls Glee Club performed, Supt. Bogan spoke on athletic ideals, and letters were awarded for basketball and baseball to named students. Acey Parker spoke on athletics building character, citing virtues like self-reliance and teamwork.
