Four more school districts Wilson Golonville Phimsey and Herrick join Clare Public School district in a planned annexation vote. Elections run May 28 Colonville May 31 Phimsey June 4 Herrick June 6 with polling at Colonville Wilson and details from county officials.
The Walter H. Larman Legion Auxiliary No. 128 sponsors a three day Buddy Poppy sale May 24–26 to fund veteran rehabilitation. Volunteers including Sue Holmes and Mabel Ortin lead the drive with posters displayed and cooperation from local VFW posts.
Clare High School hosted the 1956 rural graduation on May 16. Robert Carter presented diplomas to 57 pupils while Lenard Schwanz awarded certificates of achievement to Mrs. Ernest Kleiner and Vanle Mickle for Community Living and Military Service. Dr. Hinil R. Pfister spoke on Opportunity, linking to the class motto. White's Greenhouse donated six fuchsia plants for the event.
Veterans and members of veteran organizations are needed to help decorate military graves at Cherry Grove Cemetery for Memorial Day. The work begins at 6 PM on Monday May 28. Families with servicemen’s graves should notify Connie Walker or John Rodabaugh and give grave location for flag marking.
Memorial Day events begin at 9:30 a.m. with a City Hall gathering of uniformed service members. At 10 a.m. the school band departs for downtown followed by a short address at Honor Roll by Ina Hammond of the American Legion Auxiliary and a wreath presentation by Jack Rodabaugh of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A 10:19 a.m. lineup forms including Gold Star Mothers, Legion Auxiliary, Boy and Girl Scouts, and veterans groups. the local Army reserve unit participates and schoolchildren join the parade from the school building. At 11 a.m. services proceed at Cherry Grove cemetery with an invocation by Rev. Hugh Kennedy, address by Rev. Leslie Nevins, wreaths at the soldiers monument, and a volley and taps before marching to cemetery gates.
Nine candidates rehearse for the Miss Central Michigan Pageant to be held June 2 in Mt Pleasant. Clare’s entrant is Alice Walter with Eunice Demarest as Miss Midland. other contestants hail from Blanchard Beal City Rosebush Mt Pleasant Shepherd.
Ben J. Burdo told Cham ber of Commerce members at Barnes Cafe that 400 will be raised for the promotion committee with much already paid. The plan features mottoed decorations, sidewalk displays of merchandise, uniforms for staff, sidewalk cafe meals, and broad advertising including radio, newspapers, TV and mailers to promote a townwide event in Clare.
The Little League season will start Sunday June 3 after two postponements. Plans for opening ceremonies included a parade of players sponsors and league officials with Clare High School band but weather may alter activities for the opener.
Clare Manufacturing Co. will celebrate ten years in Clare with an open house on Saturday May 26. Visitors may tour the plant from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and enjoy free refreshments plus helium balloons for hundreds of children. Plant Manager Harold Sandborn and department heads will be present with Nelson Miles Holleys VP for Labor Relations visiting from Detroit. Estimated attendance totals may exceed four thousand, including 2,500 employees and families and about 1,500 other guests.
The second annual Junior Band Concert at Clare High School features CHS Elementary and Junior bands performing marches and light classics under Lloyd Conley at 8 p.m. In the program are Abide With Me NBC March Mellow Moods Indian Boy and more with a Jack and the Beanstalk feature narrated by Vernette Dunkle. Both bands close with a joint Firecracker March Home On The Range Venetian Varieties and Star Spangled Banner. About sixty five musicians are expected. the facility will showcase Clare Manufacturing’s carburetor plant with tours and displays including Ford carburetors and an open house for visitors ending with honors for long time employees.
A robin battles a truck mirror at Cyriel Belle farm after seeing its reflection. For nearly a week the bird lunges at the reflected foe, pecking and beating with wings as Cyriel tries moving the truck and even drapes a cloth over the mirror. The fight continues unless something distracts the bird.
City announces Clean-Up Week with pickup and paintup activities in Clare. Workers will conduct regular trash pickups on two days before Decoration Day to tidy streets for holidays. Residents urged to place items at curb. trash burners prohibited and to be moved to backyards. containers required.
Opinion No 2354 holds that enrollment rights for nonresident pupils rest solely with local school boards. The Legislature may require out-of-district tuition but cannot override district discretion beyond constitutional limits. Letter signed by Harold R Brown answers Clare County Board of Education’s question on district authority amid local annexation concerns.
Iron Mountain Mayor R P Anderson served as Clare’s mayor for a day during the Michigan Week mayor exchange. He toured Clare City Hall, the sewage plant, Kraft Cheese, Clare Packing, Thayer’s ice cream, and local industries, then attended a banquet at the Hotel Doherty and the city commission meeting.
NOTE-BOOK reports rural students wrap up the year with country picnics and plan to ride buses to town schools in fall. The Junior and Elementary band will perform a full program of marches pop tunes and light classical pieces for parents and friends tonight. Mayor Laurence Selter returns to town after a Michigan trip, joining a luncheon dinner at Hotel Dickinson and a beaver supper hosted by a local club featuring venison fish and tusk pat.
