City Commission preliminarily approves a 460 075 budget for Clare for 1971 72 up about 18000 from last year. The 14 mill property tax yields 194 764 on a 14 643 910 valuation with a 5 percent delinquent tax reduction.
Clare County and its units including the City of Clare were told to delay tax levies until the State Tax Commission rules on appeals challenging the county’s State Equalized Valuation. Two protests were filed by Frost Township supervisor Leo Cooper and Hamilton Township’s Oliver Dennis, citing discrimination and seeking higher totals than local assessors. The county’s overall figure stood about 11 million above local valuations, prompting the Commission to scrutinize the equalization report.
Clare High School students marked Michigan Week with the annual May Festival. The program featured a concert by the combined bands and chorus, plus displays from the art and shop departments showcasing wood art, painting, and sculpture.
Summer Session 197] begins June 14 at Mid Michigan Community College and runs eight weeks to August 6. Course work includes development classes in English math and sciences for students needing brush up before starting freshman year, plus regular college credit offerings. Summer programs feature physical education camps golf horseback riding archery and driver education for adults. A benefit country music jamboree at Clare Ideal Theater raises funds for the Clare Osteopathic Hospital building fund with Colmus Family Jerry Schafer and the Jacks and Jills and the Wild West Show performing in two shows at 7 and 9 15.
Construction starts on a one story expansion at 193 South Second Street to house extra switching gear for Harrison’s northeast and northwest rural areas. The 22 by 35 foot concrete and brick addition by Greenwald Construction of Mt Pleasant is due to be finished in December with an estimated total cost of 253,900 dollars.
Annual school elections on June 14 will feature four candidates for two Clare Board seats including Mrs. Glen Born and Mrs. Charles Fletcher along with incumbent Joseph Johnston. Farwell lists four candidates for a single four year term led by Dean Luce. Harrison shows incumbent Charles Ashcraft among six seeking two four year terms. other names include John C. Luebke and Rumsey Swallow.
Mid Michigan Community College held commencement on campus Sunday at 3 p.m. with 47 graduates. MMCC faculty, trustees, and speakers included Dean T. Allen Nichols and President Eugene W. Gillasp y. Student awards were presented to Phillip Allen and others for Central Michigan University scholarships.
